Lost 52 today..

I have dealt with my neighbors dogs chaos for 16 years now. Animal control has been out countless times...fined them at some..took their dogs at others. How many times does it take to explain "You are, by law, to keep your dogs on YOUR property and if on your neighbors causing a problem with livestock, etc. can be shot." We have killed one dog in the past. One year I lost 8 baby goats one spring but A would not take the dogs til I had picture proof of them bothering my goats. Each time I either get rid of one of their dogs or AC takes one they get 2 more to replace it. I was so happy to let my chickens free range til I noticed they had gotten an adult pit bull mix and a young german shepard which my husband caught at chicken run a few days later...one of my cats have already been attacked and vet bills are costly now. So...again....I call animal control. We have a new officer and from what I explain he is very strict so hopefully I will have his support. Otherwise..they officially know I can and WILL shoot the dogs when I catch them here. I do not like to do this but I have too much money invested in my chicken stock and they are also my pets. My husband has a very good pellet gun he killed one dog with...,I am for getting the 22 out. Looking forward to spring when we get our Pyrenees...hopefully that will keep the chaos down. So...if you have a problem with dog attacks...don't hesitate like I have...put them down cause like in the post above me..they will at some point move to bigger game....humans.

I'm really sorry about your losses

I don't know what I would do, my chickens are my babies.

So sorry to hear this!

Seems to me that she should be the one to contain her animals not you! The problem is her animals coming onto your property! Anyway...my neighbors have some large dogs but they also have the underground electric fencing! Works like a charm! We are on 5 acres and secluded by the woods so the dogs would have to travel to get to us anyway. But I'd absolutely mention the invisible fencing...it would be way less expensive for her in the long run then to continue paying fines. Again....so sorry...I hope you can rebuild your flock quickly. Blessings, Keri

I am sorry for your loss! Poor defenseless babies. I am a dog lover through and through, but I would shoot to kill if I saw the dogs again. You are losing your livelihood-which only hurts YOUR family in the long run.You need to protect your family above anything else. Its awful that your neighbor is such an irresponsible owner, what if it bites a kid next? Once a dog starts it wont stop.
As an owner of Pit bulls,I am always under close watch-even though I can trust my dogs to lay in the chicken coop with the girls. Same should go for all dogs, regardless of breed. Can you imagine if those dogs were Pit bulls? They would have been put down first incidence!(sorry, off topic rant) Anyway, Id treat em like coyotes-thats how they are behaving.I doubt the owner would be upset, she already doesnt seem to care. Dont feel guilty pretend they are coyotes when you shoot em. Protect your investment and your family.

They would never consider underground fencing....actually their property is fully fenced but they refuse to close the gate to contain them....they said it was too much trouble to open and shut the gate each time they left or come home. I told them why not part outside the gate? No comment to that one...just walked off. So....a bullet for now is the only fix. We are getting a pyrenees in the spring...can't wait!

Oh...someone commented on the pit bulls. I'm not knocking Pit Bulls. I use to work with a rescue and dealt with some very nice pits. My brother has one and she is a baby doll...I agree with what you said...regardless of the breed...there are good ones and there are bad ones.

Bullhockey. If the owner doesn't give a hoot about the dogs, why should the victim mourn their loss? They're not the only dogs in the world, and a destructive nuisance as far as the victim is concerned. I'd rehome them far far away, but I don't think we're thinking of the same place..
