Tuesday morning I noticed one of my 7 week olds was acting off, lethargic, breathing hard, not eating, etc. I separated him, gave him fluids and a shot of Baytril. Twelve hours later he was dead. Given my experiences last year I thought it would be best to send him off for necropsy, so i boxed him up and shipped him to UC Davis on Wednesday. Cause of death was not blackhead or coccidiosis, but ascites due to a heart defect.

I'm so sorry about your baby. I wonder how prevalent heart problems is in peas? My peacock that I wrote about early this spring is still alive and doing well. I bought a hen for company and keep them in their own run with some guineas so he doesn't exert himself. If it wouldn't cost me another $150, I would take him back to the vet and have his heart checked again to see if the prognosis is still the same.
