Lost a hen today!

Oh, I'm really sorry. I didn't know about the foxes!!! It's alright though. Were all here to comfort you.

Thank you

I went to DBF's last night and saw her for the first time since the incident. She is really perky and eating and drinking just fine. He was mistaken about the intestines

but her vent is very extended, red, and swollen and she's not laying. He said she was bleeding from the vent when he found her and once the other hens saw blood, well...you know what they do.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time and I offered to put her out of her misery for him but he wants to give it a couple more days just to be sure. At least for now she is separated and comfortable and being spoiled.

Hello again,
I read somewhere over the years that you could use hemorrhoidal ointment on a hen with extended vent. It shrinks the inflamed tissue & allows it to recede back where it belongs. (Just like in humans...ahem) I really don't think it would/could hurt to try it. You decide though. Continued good luck with her. Don't give up yet!

I'm sorry to report that she is gone

DBF just emailed me that there was no hope for her so he put her out of her misery today. Said it was the hardest thing he ever had to do, and he buried her out by his other favorite pets.

I got home last nite and went to check on my 15 new chicks. I saw a opossum in my chicken coop. I was able to pin it against the side of coop and put it into a box. Then into a garabe can until Animal control came and got it.

Sorry- I had just wrote and asked how she was doing- guess we were typing about the same time- I hate to hear about your hen- It may seem silly to non-chicken people, but it's really hard to lose your chickens when you are attached to them.

I agree - people don't understand. Thank you all for thinking about her.

Clayhillcouple - I'm glad you got that opossum before it got any of your babies!!!!
