Lost a rooster

Say he does come back and I do make them a bachelor pad will they just try to kick home out again? Should I not let them free range? Our back yard isn’t the biggest and anywhere I put them in the back yard wouldn’t be out of sight of the hens…
They might even kill him, so in your situation and restricted space a bachelor pad will not work.

Indeed, this is often overlooked by wellmeaning beginners and the cuteness stage can soon turn very ugly.

So best be prepared, know the the facts and be willing to act before someone gets hurt.

Good luck rehoming them! :fl
I did as much research as I could and luckily I knew what would become of it, just wasn’t as prepared as I wanted to be. 😭
Thank you so much I think I already have homes for at least 2 of them. 🥳

I ordered (6) sexed chicks the 1st yr and (6) more sexed chicks the 2nd year and 13 sexed chicks the 3rd yr. I also ordered (2) cockerels so I could have a self sustaining flock. I now have one good rooster and (13) layers after thinning my herd and 6 of these are in their prime. You need to have a goal in mind and steadily work towards it. Don't look at getting rid of chickens(roosters)as a bad thing. You have to make room for the ones you need and have room for.

I needed this, thank you so much

I thin every batch of chicks at one year old and any I don't want are re-homed or sold. I strive for peace in my flock and buy sexed chicks only to limit the number of cockerels I get. I separate the cockerels from the pullets and raise them with the flock .
