So sorry Janine... that sux.

If you decide to get some more chicks, I know Echo Valley Feed here in Auburn has Plymouth Rocks and RR chicks regularly. I also have BBS Orps, BBS Turkens and Jersey giants in the bator all hatching within the month if you are interested in any of those breeds? I may have a SLW that is 5 weeks available too.. will know in a couple weeks if my Aunt doesnt want it.

Again sorry for your loss!

Oh Nancy, thank you! You're a love. I'm going to get my 6 babies out of the brooder first and do some additional dog-proofing. I'll let you know either way. I may just pick up 6 more from the local TSC. I just snuggled with my 2 week old silkie and am feeling much better. My father is bringing me an electric fence this weekend. I know it's going to be ok...... Jersey Giants huh?

Sorry for you loss.

One thing I did to my coop is put a bungie on the door so it closes by itself and closes inward so my dogs can't be tempted. I'm a total air head when it comes to things like this (and I know I would get side tracked and leave the door open) so I had to safety proof it for my self more than anyone else.

Hang in there!!!

Consider this a learning experience. Grieve, then keep reading this message board. We can never learn enough about how to care for fowl.

(I have a silkie that the neighbor dog got a week ago. Now missing half the tail fluff, possible hurt leg and blind in one eye. She is now in the mini barn with the chicks but hates it.)

Please don't give up. I got off to a VERY rough start with a group of five pullets I bought from a farm. They were all terribly sick and I had to return them. I was very discouraged but folks here on BYC reminded me that stuff happens and you just need to carry on. I am finding that the rewards of trying again have been well worth it. Good luck with the six in the brooder. I know it will go better this time.

I've told this story before- to the horror of most people, but the truth is it works.

My gramma, a very old school many generations farmer always had dogs on the farm. And generally every other manner of animal. Well one of the dogs, this big saint bernard, had a taste for barn cats. They did everything the family could think of until one day she said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, she found the dog with another cat. She took the cat stuck it in the freezer and waited until the dog brought in another cat.... took the dead cat from the freezer and commensed to beating the dog with it. I say beat- but we're talking about a little old lady here, she just whacked the dog a few times and scolded the hell out of it.

That dog lived to be nearly 14 years old- or some other ungoldly old age for such a massive dog and ever again so much as SNIFFED a cat.

Its pretty gruesome, but it works.
