Lost and Found

Well.......

We made some extended rounds and found someone who knew the owner...they didn't speak too highly of them (the owners) and weren't surprised we ended up with the chickens in our yard....we paid them a visit and sure enough there was another rooster....the owner stated they let them roam and didn't realize how far they started going (1/2 mile or so)....

They stated they get extra chickens due to coyotes etc and normally get a new flock every year due to predators....

I told them why I locked them up (I live on a main road, neighbors have dogs) and that we have been caring for them...also told them they are welcome to come get them and that we'd also open the gate and let them work their way home.....it's been pretty much all day and the chickens don't seem to want to leave....one of the owners finally came over and took the friendliest one home...I imagine the rest will work their way back or they'll be here tomorrow for them (getting dark now).....

The kids aren't thrilled but we took them to look at sheds at Lowes (future coop) and are planning to get our own birds once the weather breaks....it was good lesson for the kids in many ways...we got some time with the chickens, and then we found their real home....

Planning to do some research and coop/pen/flock planning...it's going to be fun to set things up and raise our own from chicks....I have lots of questions and will ask those on new threads as time goes on.....

Thanks for the replies...seems like a nice group here

It's below 10 degrees here now so I set up the temporary coop again...the rooster and two hens went inside about an hour ago....I just went out and picked up the last one off our deck and put it in the 'coop' and closed all but a crack so they could get out if they had too...apparently the owner is letting them stay another night...

Hi Mr. Dad,
Glad you found the owners. Even though, I really was hoping that you would get to keep them. You did the correct thing by giving the chickens care for a time while you were trying to locate the owners. I still think you should get some chickens of your own!!! You all would really enjoy having a few birds. I wish you the best of luck. You are a good man. Wish you were my neighbor. Johnny

Offer the owners a few bucks for the chickens they might take you up on it and you can give them a better home than what it sounds like they had. I took in a leghorn this summer and found her a new home (didn't want another standard size). Good luck with chickens they are fun and help keep the insect pop down in the summer:)

Dang, I was hoping the people would not want them any longer. Poor guys, they were looking for a better home because chickens don't usually wonder that far. I guess game birds do but mine never leave our property ( 2 acres) Good luck with planning your new coop and pens and by all means order the Murray McMurray catalog, then you can dream you life away like the rest of us.

It sounds to me like you sir have been adopted, kinda like our dear and beloved April.

Update from here...I'm the other half of Mr. Dad. The rest of the flock is still here. Maybe today the owner will come back to get them. If not, they have a place to stay...although my husband told her that he would take up the food and water that he has been keeping from freezing in an attempt to make them want to go home. (they don't want to budge).

We will check in later and let ya know how this all works out ! We are definitely getting our own birds. I'm really liking the idea.

In a way I feel like this was meant to happen....my wife was iffy about the idea and after getting some time with this group she's hooked....in fact we are going with a larger group when we order and are planning the area/coop/pen now.....

Maybe there will be a lesson learned for the owners as well when this is finished.....in the mean time the gate is open and the food and water is up (as I told the owner I would do)....we'll be out this afternoon and I'm figuring they will be back home when we get home.....
