I think she's pretty set on wanting these back....she told me where to get my own (locally) when I'm ready so I figure that's a hint that these are going home at some point....

We've been all over the McMurray web-site....gotta get the book, I didn't know that had one in paper (thumbs up).....

Put a sign up in your area found chickens please call ( put your number in) and describe. Leave it up for 2 weeks if no calls take it down and they are yours forever. Kathy in Texas:)

I feel so bad that you have to give them back. They left those people and came to you for a reason. It sounds like they weren't getting good care. I've NEVER had chickens wander off like that! I hope they will be warm and safe. I also would pay good $ to keep them. Merry

Why didn't the owners pick them all up when they took the friendly one?

I don't understand the reason for the chickens to 'go home' on their own. In general, chickens keep their coop in sight. It doesn't seem possible for the chickens to find their 'home' a half mile away. Almost seems they are giving them to you.

A good book is Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens.

That's a very good question......

I live on a corner of a main road and a quiet dead end....the owners live down the dead end and then have a very long driveway......

The reason I mention that is they drive past my house all the time...they have to in order to go anywhere.....

I spoke to two people there and both stated they wanted them back....

A few hours ago I took the roof off the 'coop' and made a trail of cheerios around my house and heading down in the direction of the owner...the chickens still haven't left.....and the owners drove past this morning....

One of the owners has a pickup with a cap on it....all it would take is driving up and loading them in and taking them home......

It takes all kinds of people is all I'll say at the moment (regarding the owners)...I'm trying to remain nice about the whole thing but I feel my clock starting to tick......

PS...thanks for the book recommendation...I'll pick that up....

Maybe they are trying to make sure you get hooked on chickens before they take them back. They just don't realize that you already are.

But hey, spring is just around the corner and just gives you enough time to set up a coop and brooder.

I remember when I got 'chicken fever'. Had my coop and brooder all ready to go a month before getting chicks (still had to wait 6 weeks before putting them in the coop). The local feed store gives chicks away with a purchase of starter feed. Good business sense to give chicks away, they sell lots of other stuff for first time chicken owners.

Just wanted to add, you should never deprive a chicken of drinking water.

I think in your situation I would take a friend who is not involved with it all and visit the owners again. I'd offer a few bucks for the birds (if you really want them) and if they refuse then I'd give them a dead line for picking them up. Be sure to have your friend as a witness. If they don't get them by the deadline they're yours. Be sure they understand that. If they do pick them up mention to them that if they return and are found on your property they are yours. Take pictures of the birds, keep a journal, etc. Keep a paper trail. Since you are planning on getting birds of your own you don't want their obviously not properly cared for birds continually mingling with your well cared for birds.
