About a week or two back our black hen went missing, and we thought a coyote had nabbed her, as it took one of our toms earlier in the year. Walking around yesterday, I discovered her nesting under a raised shed foundation in the shadows, in plain sight no less! Now our blue slate hen has gone wandering, hopefully she'll show up with some poults in a month! I plopped a few duck eggs in front of her to see if she'll set them too.
Our black is in a sort of trance, like she's only half there, but still reactive, and hissing when you get too close. I've heard of it before, but never experienced. Is this normal? After all, her dedication to not moving is what's kept her hidden.
