Lost chicken

She's been missing for thirteen hours now!! Do you think there's a chance she will come back?

Welcome to BYC! I would start searching for a hidden nest, I thought one of mine was taken by a predator but turns out she was sitting on eggs. Good luck to you.

I sure hope you find your lost chicken, After coming home late one night we discovered one of our chickens missing. We counted several times. It was dark, we called, we shook a cup with treats in it, but no chicken came. We went into the house and we feared the worst. In the morning the lost chicken was outside the run trying to get in with the others. I hope you find her roaming in the yard soon.

I have this same trouble with my cream legbars. They blend in so well with the leaves and trees that I have a horrible time finding them at night. There is always one that gets lost and doesn't follow the rest back into the coop at night. They seem to like to nest at night right next to the fence posts (or in the corners). So look in places that you might not think a chicken will fit in. At night, they will tend to close their eyes or tuck their heads under the wings, so flash lights will not shine back their eyes. You might just have to stop and listen for them to make a noise.

Good luck!!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined us!

If she was taken by a hawk, would there be any signs of anything? Would we have heard her? We were home the whole time!

If she was taken by a predator, it is possible you would not have seen or heard anything. If she was small enough a big hawk or owl could have just flown off with her, and some animals like foxes would just carry her away. You might want to keep your other chickens up for now in case it was a predator since the animal may well come back now.

I have a production red that is about 7 months old. Since my other one didn't come back we are thinking about getting another hen. Will they get along? Do they have to be the same breed and age?

i had my favorite one come up missing for 3days...she was trapped under an over turned bucket...mine don't free range cause of predator problems...wish they could but its not safe...I hope you find her..did the other one stop laying? Don't forget the dreaded 2 legged predator...humans...
