I looked outside to see a small hawk walking around my chicken pens. He killed my favorite Blue banty cochin hen! I think he went after my bcm roo but he was bigger than the hawk. Do hawks normally walk around or stick around after they have killed one? I saw my Muscovy Drake headed toward the hawk and he flew off. Normally the scovies stay around the chickens so nothing bothers them when they free range but not today

Yes.

And others will come, too. You can have three or more different species of hawks all sitting in the trees waiting.

That's what happened to me, anyways.

Same thing happened to me. I lost 2 hens to a Red tailed Hawk. I thought I was going to have to kill it but thankfully I was able to get other means of protection. I ha the coop in a large pen I had up for my St Croix Ram. He went in with the girls so I had I free. I have a Nubian billy and 2 Pot belly pigs in with them now. Haven't had any preditors since.

I recently lost two little girls (8wks) an EE and a buff orp. to a hawk. I had them behind my house in the "growing up coop" that's 4' x 6-8' long divided half with a house with a lift roof and a door into the chicken wire enclosed little yard. The wire short side has a flip up door to let them out and roam a bit when they get older. Any way the little girls were hanging out in my garden where their house was and the hawk killed the buff and, get this, climbed in thru the wood door thru the chicken wire yard and into the coop where it was in the process of tearing apart the EE when my husband opened the coop and found it. After the poor babies wouldn't even come out of the coop unless I was sitting out there with them. I brought them over to the big girl house at my daughters and three days later a coon had killed 3 more. (That pen is covered with net and surrounded with wire, that has rebar woven into the bottom. Now my husband is peeing around it per advice from someone in the group hee, hee. We haven't lost anymore.
