It sounds more like a coyote or dog. They like to chase the birds everywhere. I've had a dog attack my flock before. It was just like you described. I found feathers randomly in piles (where the dog probably got a hold of the bird, plucking its tail feathers, before the bird escapes from it and runs away again). Just because you find feathers belonging to a certain bird, doesn't mean the bird is dead. You probably will find them with no tail feathers. However, dogs also sometimes do catch them and, unfortunately, kill them. If you do find a dead one, you can usually tell if it is a dog or coyote. Dogs don't eat the chickens most of the time, they just do it for fun. Coyotes also do it for fun, but they will also munch on them. If it is a coyote, keep an eye out for it. It is best just to shoot them on the spot since you can't really catch them, and they will just keep coming back. Dogs, you can do a few things. You can try to catch them and lock them up till you find their owner. You can shoot above them to scare them away and they usually don't come back. Or, you can just shoot them, if you yourself have it in you to do that. Hope you find a solution.
