Lost my Chickie today :(

OMGoodness! That just brought tears to my eyes! God does hear and care when you are sad, and is indeed someone you can turn to even when it seems like such a "minor" thing to others, it is a big deal to him!!! Praying that you have some little ones from those eggs!!!

I'm so sorry. Poor Chickie, losing her life in such a horrifying way. The sad dog/chicken stories never cease to break my heart. Never one of the universe's finer moments, allowing that kind of terror to be inflicted on helpless feathered souls. Having just had a hen brutally attacked by a neighbor's on-the-loose dog on December 9th, but able to stop him before he killed her, and having nursed her back to health over several weeks with very intensive care and surgery at the vets, I know what he did to her was not fast, it was pure terror for her as he rammed her against hard surfaces incuding the run wall and tore at her, ripping her open. I hate writing these words but if it saves even one bird because someone reading this will hold onto their dogs tighter or fence their birds in more securely, then it will be worth it. Unfortunately we can't count on the universe to be merciful. Sorry to those who think it is - but I think it's downright cruel in these situations.

I'm so very sorry for what happened to Chickie. In your case, if you knew she had an "escape hatch" I'm sure you would have blocked it - sometimes we just don't know. One of my cat rescues on the night I caught him was in a cage in my outbuilding for the night - the cage was securely latched, OR SO I THOUGHT! (I checked it over and over before assuring myself all was well for the night, kind of like folks who check their coffee maker over and over before leaving for work to make sure it's turned off). What I didn't know was that he was so much smarter than the average bear. In the middle of the night he literally undid the latch (no easy feat, even for dexterous humans) and let himself out. Thankfully the outbuilding was secure and he couldn't get out of there but it took me 5 days to catch him in a hav-a-hart trap as he stayed up in the rafters (story had a hapopy ending - now he has a wonderful home). I nicknamed him Houdini, as you did Chickie. The point being that I was absolutely certain he was secure in that cage for the night - and I was soooo wrong! So I understand how it can happen. I'm really sorry.
