Over the past week, I lost my whole flock to a weasel.
I am so sick about it, more for my Polish Roo who is now alone and Im so concerned.
I wont go into it much because we did everything right , had them for 2 years with no problems.
Please, someone adopt my WCPR . Im thinking someone who has a young flock that can grow up with him. I dont know. Ive never
had this happen .
I live in Northern Michigan, Champion to be exact. Its in the Upper Peninsula not far from Marquette.
He is so sweet and so lonely, please HELP.
Feel free to PM me.
Well, Im going to keep my fingers crossed , but I moved my " Widower " roo, Phillip, over to my Silkie, Cochin and Millie
flock of hens hoping that nature will take its course in a positive way, and the girls will accept him .
They are only 8 months old and grew up next to the flock I lost, and Phillip seemed like he was liking those girls also.
Right now, we have a screen of hardware cloth separating him from the girls in their coop so they can get used to
each other.
When Im outside in their run, Ill let them all out together and everything seems OK, ( knock on wood).
The day after we moved him, I heard him CROW for the 1st time since he lost all his first girls last week..( 2 days ago, we
lost the LAST girl, a White Leghorn which was his favorite. She was injured in the attack a week earlier along with
my Salmon Favorelle Roo from another flock..
When this first happened was when my son and I looked outside at all the flocks that we had let out 2 hours earlier
to get fresh air since they all have been locked up due to all the snow and the below 0 temps.
We dont know how long he had been literally frozen to the snow, but I seriously believe that being stuck
in the snow slowed down the bleeding from his wattles, below his left eye and comb .
I carefully, and as fast as I could, got him un stuck and wrapped him in towels and sat in a section of my house
that we have set up as a "{ Hospital " in case of emergencies like this.
I held him as close to my body as I could and sat in front of a space heater for about an hour until he thawed out
and we had gotten the bleeding under control by using " BLOOD STOP"...
OMG that powder is amazing and I am soooo glad I had it on hand.
My son immediately brought in his girl so he could see that she was OK, and boy did that Help him.
Now this is CRAZY, but later in the day, I heard the Most Horrible screaming coming from my enclosed run that
houses the bantams.
I had NO shoes on and No coat , mind you, when I RAN into their run and found this LITTLE 6 inch WHITE WEASEL
attacking my BLUE SPLASH Silkie.
It stopped, then RAN between my feet and out the door. I picked up the Silkie and found that I had found her
just in time, thank God.
Then the little jerk RAN back into the run, OVER my feet and into their coop, chasing a Silkie that was sitting on her
eggs. The weasel looked at me like " You're STILL here ?" I am just shocked and worse, I was now ALONE.
I knew my son would be home shortly, and I Knew I COULD NOT leave the run to go get Shoes and jacket
and my Rifle, so I spent 25 mins guarding ALL my flocks from this thing.
I see my son pull up in front of the house and I started SCREAMING for him to get the rifle. He had NO idea what
happened, but seconds later, he was with me , rifle all cocked, and spent an hour looking for this thing.
Still have NOT seen this thing in 2 weeks now, however, I have Catch and Release traps set up all over
and safely away for the rest of the flocks and it has NOT come back.
Now, please understand, I did Everything I needed to do to protect my flocks that Ive had 2 years and NEVER
had attacks, but it takes just 1 small hole in a corner of the run, to
Destroy a Whole flock...we could NOT find the hole .
Well, Im just barely able to start talking about this as these were my BABIES, and I knew that I could
"vent" in a place where I would find other " Chicken Parents"..
Thanks for listening,
DD
