I'm sorry for your loss. It seems it's always the favorite that's the first to go. I've had hens lay long large eggs once in awhile but not all the time like Nugget. She mightve had a reproductive issue, and the fact she hadn't laid an egg in awhile.

So sorry for your loss. It is always sad to have young kids and lose a loved pet. I would try to send her to the state poultry vet today for a necropsy. The body needs to be wrapped in plastic and kept cold, not frozen. Here is a link that includes a list with your state vet:

I'm so sorry for your loss!!!! Picture with your daughter is so sweet too we understand you. I have a picture with one of my chickens, the last in pecking order, a very friendly and nice chicken. When i see that picture i always cry, i was 11 or 12 ys old and i took her in my arms with her neck on my shoulder. she died for repruductive issues. Big hugs to you and your childern
