Lost Scout

Octa took the sealed letter, squinting in the candle light at the seal stamped into the wax. Finding it appeared genuine, the lord broke the wax and opened the letter, squinting and holding it at arms length as he tried to read Ragnar's text. "Ragnar is wise to want to deal with this threat before it grows even more. Wedmor is well protected by our wall and our ships, but we cannot abandon our brothers and sisters in Aberdeen. I will send the men he requests."

He looked over at Anwir. "Is the contingent sent to Mustertown returned yet?" he asked, referring to a group of his men sent to a town much further south and on the eastern side of the Smoking Bay.

"No, my Lord," Anwir answered, with a respectful bow of his head, "I will send my falcon with a message at sunrise, telling them of what has transpired, and urge them to quicken their return." He finest, though he intended to do no such thing.

Anwir himself had advised Lord Octa to send the contingent, in hopes that the Orcs would have time enough to grow in strength. Being that Anwir had been promised gold for his aid, and the Lord had his trust in him, he'd win either way...

"Thank you," Terrowin gave a courteous bow to Lord Octa again. "If you don't mind, we would like a place to stay for tonight. Tomorrow David will leave for Camden.

Lord Octa readily agreed to shelter the men for the remainder of the night, as well as granted permission for Charles and David to take fresh horses on to Camden come morning, then summoned a servant to take them to comfortable quarters.

--

During the night, Aelfric slept fitfully. Either the orcs had forgotten to feed him, or they simply had no intention of keeping him healthy. Plus he was holding the rope around his wrists, trying to maintain the illusion that he was still securely bound, hoping Gomez would return to attempt another round of interrogation.

--

"ahhhhh" Laethros yawned as his eyes opened, the sun coming up slowly over the horizon and filtering down upon the pair near the river. Even with the fire Anna had built, the night had been cold and the man had slept almost as poorly as Aelfric. He closed his eyes again and crossed his arms tightly over his chest, not looking forward to trying to walk again, or tackle the trek up the hill.

"Thank you, my Lord" David said simply and turned to follow the servant to his quarters for the remainder of the night. He would check on his horse when they were allowed to leave and see if the stallion could travel onward in the morning.

Anna startled awake at the noise he made and looked over to him. She sent a hate filled glance to the cliff then put some more sticks on the fire to warm them before they would have to go. Sighing softly she moved to the river to get a drink and wash the sleep from her eyes before disappearing into the woods. After several minutes she came back with the snare rope wrapped around her boot again and a rabbit in her hands, already prepared for cooking, she had used the knife she had taken from him to prepare it.

After the men from Aberdeen left for their beds, Anwir went to his own, where his very young, beautiful wife awaited his return... In the morning, he dressed, and collected his falcon just as the sun began to lighten the sky.

Sitting at his desk, Anwir wrote out a message;

Gomez, I have grave news that could spell disaster for the Orc's plans.
Charles has betrayed us, he has warned Aberdeen and now Wedmor, and men
are now being sent to warn Camden, I will do my best to slow them. They should reach it
by nightfall, if swift. The contingent I had sent to Mustertown has not yet returned,
so Wedmor is short on men, but they are still strong enough to put up a fight.
A.R.

Anwir rolled up the small peace of parchment, and tied it to the falcons leg, then stood, walked to the window, and tossed the large bird out into the dim sunlight. He watched as it flew off towards the Orc camp, then prepared himself to meet the men that were going to Camden, he planed to travail with them, and hopefully, slow them...

David got up in the early morning light and headed to get something to eat from the kitchens. He went to check on his horse and see if the stallion would be ready for travel again with only a few hours of rest. He knew it might be wiser to take a fresher horse, but preferred his own, personally trained mount to any other. He glanced up when a falcon called then continued on his way, dismissing the sight since it was common enough.

Laethros opened his eyes again as Anna returned with the skinned and gutted rabbit. "Well, that sure looks a bit more appealing than the hill behind me," he commented, not anxious to get started. He was still pondering what he would do when they reached the top. He took no pleasure in the thought of killing the girl, but neither would he be marched back to Aberdeen to be, more than likely, publicly flogged and then hung.

--

Charles stirred as he heard David up and moving about. "morning already?" he groaned, rolling onto his side, then into a sitting position, running his hand over the bruise on his face. The few hours of sleep had done little to refresh him, but he forced himself to his feet anyway and followed David toward the stables.

The girl, Hilde, was already getting a mount ready for Charles, having been told he would need a fresh horse. "Would you like me to saddle your stallion, sir?" she asked David. "Or would you prefer a fresh mount?"

Anna put the rabbit on a stick and put it over the fire to cook. She let a small smile touch her lips then glanced to the cliff and away, nodding "That it does. We will need energy to climb that thing." She said then moved to the river to wash her hands and the skull of the rabbit. When she came back she had the skull cleaned and filled with water for him to drink from, it was the best she could do given their current situation.

"He can be tricky with strangers, I'll saddle him" David said kindly and moved to the horse to get him ready to ride again. He had decided on the walk over that he wasn't going to trust a strange horse in case there was fighting along the way. He had to be able to trust his mount to stay under him and not take off at any odd noise of battle they came across.

Anwir gathered what things he would need, including writing material, and a long saber, it was not a type of sword used in the area, but he proffered it. He left, ignoring his wife as he did, and continued to the stables, seeing the men preparing their steeds, "Good morn, may I accompany you on your travail to Camden?" Anwir asked as he strolled over to them.
