Lost Scout

"Orcs?" Jasper asked, rather belatedly. He'd heard stories of course and seen drawings of large humanoid monsters, often depicted with very large teeth and crude weapons, but they weren't supposed to exist anymore...right?! "I thought..." he started, looking from Aelfric to Ezra to Strider trying to determine if they were pulling his leg. "I thought they were killed off a long time ago."

"Only driven out of human lands," Aelfric replied. "Many were indeed killed, but not all." He'd only encountered the foul monsters once before, almost a decade ago and long before he had sworn fealty to Lord Ragnar, on a journey north, beyond the territory tamed by men. "It is disturbing news that they have come as far south as the Greywoods," he said, again trying to stay calm for the sake of the others in the group. But in his mind the situation had just gone from bad to worse, even with the addition of Kane to their party. Some of the stories mentioned orcs taking human females as prisoners to use for their own devious pleasures and those stories often did not have a happy ending for the woman. He swallowed hard, trying to shake away the nightmarish images from his head.

"We need to discover their camp and take news of it back to Lord Ragnar," Aelfric said.

Strider looked to Jasper, then back to Aelfric "Settler?" He asked with one eyebrow raised, then shook his head "Doesn't matter, what's been going on out here?" He asked, wanting to be caught up on what had happened since the letter he had received and why they were out on the trail instead of in the new settlement.

"This is Jasper, a surgeon's apprentice," he said for a quick introduction.

"We're looking for a scout that did not return," Aelfric explained. "She left the settlement 6 days.. well, almost 7 days ago now. Her trek should only have taken her 3 days to complete. I had hoped that perhaps it was nothing more serious than a lame horse, but with your grave news, I fear now she may have suffered the same fate as Reba."

Strider nodded and ran a hand through his hair. "I was following the trail of three of the orcs that came out this way, splitting from the group that took Reba." He said "That's part of the reason it's taken so long, the group keeps splitting and I don't know which has her.But this group is following the trail that way." He said pointing in the direction Aelfric and his group had been headed, and towards where Danielle was captured.

(I promise that I haven't forgotten about you guys! I've just had an incredibly busy week, and my final exams are coming up in two weeks! I'll try and post something tomorrow)

Ezra looked thoughtfully in the direction that Strider pointed. "That's the direction of the road, and where Duke came from. I wouldn't be surprised if they ran into each other accidently, unless the orcs are tracking us. Do you think that might have been what made the tracks that we followed earlier?" He looked at Aelfric and frowned, worried about Danielle. The fact that her coat was in the saddle bag made him almost positive that she had been the one riding him, but since he couldn't prove it he didn't want to make an false assumptions that would lead to a rash decision. "In any case, there's not much that we can do until first light but wait."

The exams? They went pretty good, I think. I don't have any marks back yet but I felt confident writing them.
(Yep.
