We went away for the weekend & couldn't get anyone to close the coop for us. I left plenty of food & water, more than usual (3 full feeders) I only have 5 chickens so not a bunch needed.

I lost a chicken last week to a coon so just before leaving I ran an electric wire around the top of the fence.

It must not have worked. We came back today to find only the rooster was still alive. He had flown the coop & was loose in the woods. The rest were eaten or headless.

This won't happen again.

I set the live trap, & I reinforced the ground wire on the fence. I was assuming the fence itself would be grounded & a coon on the fence touching the wire would get shocked. Not so. I ran a new ground wire completely around the fence ensuring the fence netting itself is directly grounded to the fence charger.

I also did the grab test. The coon will now be shocked if he is touching the hot wire & my fence.

Oh no!!!

I'm going away soon for four days - And here I was thinking I could leave the coop open to the run...... I better think that one over!

I am so sorry for your loss. It would be so devastating to come home to that terrible sight.

I'm glad you got your fenced fixed now for your future chickens.

I've talked with my wife about putting a net over the top. I think that will happen this week & I will go to the auction on Friday to get more birds.

This sucks because I can't usually get pure breed birds at the auction unless they are worn out layers.
