Lost Toenail & Bled out Overnight

Thank you everyone. It helps, it really does.

I talked with my Avian Veterinarian today and she said that in the many years that she has been practicing, she has never seen, nor heard of
a chicken dying from a lost toe nail!. Of course she also said that, it maybe could happen.

I'm thinking that maybe the chicken had some internal injuries when she hit the top of the nesting boxes or perhaps had a coagulation issue.
I just wish I had brought her into the house and applied pressure to stop the bleeding. ((sigh))

In any event, I bought some daffodils for the house and we will toast a very nice, but young, Buttercup tonight.

Again, thank you BYC members!! My co-workers are compassionate, but you guys are wonderful!

so sorry to hear of your loss.

I just dealt with this dilemma yesterday(well, almost). My son called me over cuz my oeg roo was bleeding so bad. I went over and sure enough he ripped his spur off...blood everywhere. I tried the flour but it didn't slow. Couldn't find the styptic powder so I ran to my moms to grab cornstarch. Took me an hour with the cornstarch to get it to stop...he just kept bleeding through everything. Finally got it packed tight and wrapped it so he didn't knock it off. By the time it was all said and done he was shivering and sluggish(even falling asleep while I was holding him and he has NEVER done that). Lucky for me he was ok but I honestly wasnt sure he was gonna make it. All my years of grooming dogs, cats and birds I never had this hard of a time. I am sorry you had this happen
