Lost two chicks due to frost last night :(

It's over an acre out so I know my husband wouldn't like the idea running it out that far because of safety issues. We would need more then one for sure.I have never had this problem before.

Could you possibly split them into two different flocks at night so they don't pile as deeply. And try to not have sharp corners, rounded corners might help. It sounds like they could survive the cold but not the piling on.

Good Luck!!!

I'll try in see if the xtra perches helps tonight

Nothing for them to hurt them selves with it's just a framed off section in our small barn coop.Hoping tomorrow I wake up to see nothing but live birds.

This may sound crazy but what about rocks? We had a power outage when I had 3 day old baby chicks and I took some rocks and heated them by a campfire my kids were cooking hot dogs over in the back yard. I wrapped some in some old rags and put them in the brooder and it worked and kept them warm enough and all chicks survived. Maybe you could heat some water on the stove and get some rocks hot. They stay hot a long time.. you could scatter them around somewhat and your chicks could draw heat from them. Just an idea for a safe heat source.

There are other reasons besides being cold that could cause them to pile up and cause death by suffocation. I almost lost two young chickens when the sound of the lawnmower spooked them and they piled up. The two on the bottom of the pile had to be revived.
My LF chicks were handling those temps. at seven weeks old just fine.
Sorry for your loss.

None lost last night!! I had to seperate half only because they didn't seem interested in the perches and was piling up on each other again. It was nuts last night trying to get them to use the perches but no success. It wasn't even cold and they still insist to pile up.I'm gonna try the heated rocks and see if that would help but it looks as though I may have to seperate them again at night.I have to get surgery tomorrow and will be out for a few days so relying on my DH to care for them I'm afraid he'll forget about it so I guess this is my best bet since it worked last night.Thank you all for your help.I don't want to lose anymore!!!!
