Came outside to my little girls screaming that there was a dog after their chickens. It killed two, one of them was the family favorite. This sucks! It also left another hen with her back ripped up badly. What should we do with her? It looks bad, I don't know if she can heal. The kids are devastated and it made me want to cry when I was putting away what will be the last "Coco" egg tonight. She will be missed. How can we get so attached to chickens? I'm wondering if this is worth it.

just went through the same thing here but with my kids own dog. she got three of our six and two of them were my wifes favorites. to make matters worse on our way to dinner tonight a bird flew into our windshield, bad luck with birds today.........

I am so sorry for you. That is a terrible situation for you. What did the neighbors say or do? I would be worried the dog would come back. We have three dogs and I don't trust them at all with the chickens. All well behaved and born and raised here, but givin the opportunity they would kill my flock in an instant. I am paranoid that one of the doors will accidentally be left open. I love my dogs and my hens and try to be extra cautious. The down side for you is this wasn't your dog so you can't controll what it does. I would be livid and sick in your situation. Sounds like your chickens bring your family a lot of joy so don't give up on them. I Hope your neighbors are willing to do anything to keep the dog off your property. If I were you I would shoot the dog if it came near the chickens again. A neighbors dog On My property is a predator in my mind. The hen that is hurt should be removed from the rest of the flock to avoid the others pecking at the wounds. I hope she gets better

Thank you for your kind words. The neighbor was very sorry and said that they will get rid of the dog. The hen that was badly injured died a couple of days later. Her back was shredded, we did what we could. It makes you just sick to your stomach when something like this happens, right in the barn, their safe place. I know they are just chickens, but you get attached to them just as you would any other pet. I'm very lucky to have a dog that has never in sixteen+ years tried to hurt any critter.

I think your neighbors ought to be commended for offering to get rid of their dog. Was this a dog that is frequently allowed to roam, or was it a one time, "oops-Fido-was-accidentally-let-out-or-got-loose" situation? For a one time accident, I'd tell the neighbors thank you for offering to do the right thing, but I don't expect you to have to do it. If it's a frequent roaming dog, I wouldn't say a word - just let them take care of it how they see fit. Anyway, count your blessings and appreciate neighbors that are willing to do the right thing. There are so many on here that don't have that.

This was a dog that is apparently only here on the weekends, belongs to the daughter who is in college. It was an accidental escape and we did tell them that they shouldn't make her get rid of it just because of this incident, but they expressed that a beagle should not live in an apartment anyway and they were already wanting their daughter to re-home it. So all parties involved seem to be on the same page and I am grateful to have nice neighbors. These things could happen to anyone after all. We once had a rott that got loose and killed a neighbors cat, we were lucky to have good neighbors back then too. They were very understanding about the situation and I feel that we should have the same attitude. We did get rid of the cat-killing rott though which was probably for the best or we never could have gotten chickens.
