Lost two red sex links and one cat

Some predators are just down right hard to catch.
At first we lost one of our cats to a dog attack. I never could determine which dog it was. We have neighbors that sometimes let their dogs run free but not very often, which usually isn't a problem until they form packs of 3 or 4 then all heck breaks loose.
We lost one hen while it was free ranging, this time my father in law saw the dog carry it off, ran to get me but was too late. The next week, rinse lather repeat, only this time i was able to see not one but three dogs chasing two hens. I was able to get a warning shot off, but couldn't get a bead because the slippery beasties where well concealed within some trees. The warning shot did scare them off and I was able to save one hen, but lost one as well.
This has been a couple months ago, and sure enough not a lick of trouble since then. I am considering building a large run area just in case though.
Any of you have trouble with dogs?

I haven't personally, and I am in the country where people sometimes let their dogs run loose. I think my dogs tend to keep strange dogs away.

But there must be hundreds of posts on here about losing chickens to dogs, many times the owner's dog. They think chickens are great toys.

Maybe install some motion activated lights to give you a warning next time? I'd never let my dogs run free, I don't understand it. If people don't have a fence they make great boundary collars that keep your pups in your own yard you know?

On another note, When my chicks show up I'm sure it'll be fun teaching my dogs they aren't squeaky toys lol Dogs a lot of the time just can't help themselves when it comes to chasing down something tempting.

Sorry for your lose Two hounds got in2 my run and ate my red star and killed my slw pullet for fun. Yes I have trouble w/ dogs but saying something to the owners is like talking to a stump they don't care. I know just as every1 else does what needs to be done, nuff said.

For all the talk of coyotes, hawks, bobcats, weasels, skunks, whatever, probably more chickens are lost to domestic dogs than any other single predator. Too often that dog (or dogs) is owned by the chicken's owner or someone in their immediate family.

I have a chainlink fence,but I know dogs can climb fences. I trapped one in my yard,and it probably climbed the chainlink before AC got here. I would SSS any dogs that get in my yard if I wasn't able to get AC here to pick them up. People will be less likely to let their pets roam if they disappear,or the owners have to pay AC to get their pets. So sorry for your loss. I wouldn't even bother with AC if a dog actually killed my hens. I would take care of them myself.

This is sad but true. Just read all the posts. Domestic dogs kill for simply for sport too and many times will kill everything in a single visit if not stopped. At least the wild predator is killing to eat, to survive.
