Lots of dairy cow questions *Update*

Hound, I just want you to know IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! There I was trying to click on Redeyr's thread about Katie and I hit yours instead. Foolish me, I read it. I should have known better, which is why I always try to read only the dog-related and horse-related ones. But, no, you gotta go posting about dairy cows and I've always WANTED a dairy cow and now look at the mess you've caused: I'm planning to clear a new 5-acre section for new pasture and I'm hunting all over online for information about how to care for a family cow and what kind of housing they need and who is selling Guernsey or Guernsey/Jersey crosses and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

Thanks!

My second choice would be a Jersey. My concern with Jerseys is calving problems

Jerseys actually have one of the biggest pelvic measurements...I raised reg. jerseys for several years and had very little calving problems...They have high butterfat and protien very rich milk...My family still milks 150 head of jerseys I still get my hands dirty at the dairy some miss the action some days...lol

Happy Holidays

LOL Well again, not to enable, but considering Bluebell and I don't really know each other from Adam things are going very well

I have to lead her about 300 ft twice a day from the barn to the pasture, and she's surprisingly well-behaved. She's only been halter broke for a couple of weeks. She hasn't shown the slightest mean streak. She seems to really like routine. I'm sure badly behaved Jerseys do exist, so i'd say the number one thing to look for is temperament. It wouldn't be much fun dealing with a difficult cow twice a day. I can't even begin to imagine how people deal with family cows if they haven't had horses or other large livestock, just the size is intimidating at first.

jersey cows remind me of arabian horses,,they have that same temperment and personality,,most are sweet but sometimes they can be little devils..

Its been quite the week but i'm glad to say everyone is doing great. We had coccidiosis and scours with both of the calves. The grey calf was pretty sick, but this morning when I went out to milk he was up and bawling for his momma! It's the first time he's made a noise since we got him. I think the little guy is going to pull through. His 'brother' is obnoxious but doing well, he likes to suck the other calf's ears. Bluebell is a very good girl, she is leading better than most horses and gives me 2 gallons of milk each morning. Now if only we could convince people to return the jars!

I think i'll just have a rule, if you want a refill you need to bring your original container... and clean!!
