I figured out last night that I'm deadly afraid of lightning and thunderstorms............when I've been woken up by them!

I usually don't mind them...in fact when they happen and if I'm awake, I like to watch them. But if they happen in the middle of the night and they wake me up, like last night, I will all the sudden begin shaking and my heart will begin beating really fast and the lightning flashes outside my window scare me so bad that I have to hide my face under the covers so I don't have to see them.

Last night was especially scary for some reason. It was around 1:00am and a huge roll of thunder shook the whole house and woke me up from a deep sleep. I thought it was a bomb or something! Then I realized that it was thundering. Anyways, the thunder was SO loud that I could feel the entire house trembling with each long, rumbling sound it made.

My baby chick, Ivory, was in his brooder box and I suddenly realized that I should probably shut off his light because for some reason I fired a bolt of lightning would come in through the outlet and strike him.

But my room was dark and the thunder was rolling loudly outside so I was too scared. But I guess my need to protect Ivory overcame my fear because eventually, I waited until a loud roll of thunder ended before I leaped out of bed, unplugged the light, and jumped back in so fast. I slipped under the covers and just laid there, still as a rock, half expecting a lightning bolt to strike me or something. I was so scared that my heart was pounding against my chest and and I was breathing hard and my room felt really humid and suffocating.

I stayed under my covers, even though it was really warm under them because it was a warm night last night (which is probably the cause of the huge thunderstorm). I finally fell asleep but then I suddenly felt this strange shocking feeling that I could imagine what it would feel like if a current of lightning went through someone, and I honestly believed that I had been struck by lightning!

I couldn't move or anything for a few seconds and when I finally could, I could feel my heart pounding like I had just sprinted a mile. I honestly thought that maybe a bolt of lightning had jumped from the outlet near my bed and passed through me. I even thought I could hear strange voices outside of my bedroom and I was just terrified!

And guess what I was thinking the whole time? I was thinking that I had been struck by lightning and was gonna post it on BYC as soon as I woke up in the morning. Strange what you think when you're half asleep!

But now that I think about it, I think I might have dreamed about being struck by lightning. But it felt so strange and real. I must have imagined it after I fell asleep.

So yeah, a really frightening and strange night it was.

Anyone ever have a similar "night fright" when it's thundering and you're suddenly awoken from a deep sleep?

We had a good thunderstorm here during the night....I was still awake reading in bed but the 'light show' was impressive and my house shook once when there was a horrible boom of thunder&lightning. It reminded me of a bad thunnderstorm when I lived in Florida.....we had a lot of them but the one that I'll never forget was the one were the neighbors house was struck by lightning and burned - the house was a total loss and he lost one of his cats in the fire....My other neighbors all came running to my house because they thought mine was the on struck by lightning. Not scared of them but I have to get up and look out to make sure nothing is on fire...silly but it's always my first reaction.....

Sorry you were frightened. I dont mind thunderstorms for the most part but they do scare me too if they are really bad.

I'm in New England too, so I think I experienced the same storm that you did. It was an odd thunder. No sharp cracks, but really long, loud rolling booms that lasted for at least five to ten seconds. I'm sorry you were frightened.
I love thunderstorms myself. My dog Moxie on the other hand, is not a fan! She barks at the thunder! I would just get her calm, and then another roll of thunder would come along. I eventully got her calmed down by holding her close and talking in a soothing tone. She would grumble at the thunder, for awhile, but eventually fell asleep in my arms.

Don't be afraid 77horses! I don't know if this will help, but I works whenever I'm afraid of something, remember this is coming from "smartychick"...

I research it.
If you know all about it, your your not afraid of the unknown
at least that's the theory

I feel your pain. It's the wind at night that scares me. Last year I was asleep when the wind woke me. It was so strong the rain was coming in sideways under the door. My husband laughed at me for being afraid, but the next morning we found out a tornado had come within a mile of us. Since then any storms at night make it impossible for me to sleep until I'm sure there's no danger of a tornado.

Hey, we got that same storm here at about 1:15 in the morning! Our 6 year old son came into our room twice, terrified! It was that real long rumbly thunder here, he didn't like it one bit!

One of our dogs, Nitro, doesn't like thunderstorms, either. If it's thundering, he will put his tail between his legs and go hide somewhere. He's so terrified of them that he will hide behind a chair, shivering, until it's over. Even if we comfort him it doesn't help.

But he's also afraid of driving across bridges in the car (he will try and hide under the seats) and motorcycles scare him.

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad I'm not alone!

The thing is, I'm not scared of thunderstorms that bad. In fact when I was younger I used to sit in the living room and watch out the window to try and see the lightning strikes and listen to the thunder.

I still like to do that now. But at night when I'm half asleep and it's dark and the house is completely silent...that's when it scares me.

Also, tonight we're expecting another big thunderstorm. It's been really humid and warm all day and right now the air is still humid, and the clouds are darkening. It was raining earlier, now it's cloudy but there's a beautiful sunset mixed in with it (might go take a few pics and post them here!

). As long as it doesn't thunder and lightning while I'm sleeping again, then I'm fine with it. In fact I'm going to be watching it with my weather-crazed brother if I can!
