I've searched the threads hoping to find a similar question but as yet found nothing (sorry if it's been asked/answered and I've missed it) we are new to duck keeping, I worked on a farm who had Cayuga along with others, I just absolutely fell in love with everything about them, they are beautiful, always seemed very laid back, quiet and unable to fly, I did alot of online research aswell which pretty much lead me to believe they were exactly as I was seeing them, I brought home 6 eggs, 3 were fertile, 3 hatch, 2 no issues, the 3rd needed intervention (he is not the issue, he is wonderful) my question is about my first hatched, very loving female Ebony... She is the opposite of everything I've read/seen, she's so loud and I mean loud, it really echos lol even though she has two siblings there she has to have one of us where she can see us otherwise she yells, and it gets louder and longer until she gets one of us outside then it's bliss, but she doesn't want a fuss or food it seems she just wants to be able to see us, she will even check to make sure you are there, the minute she notices you've gone she's yelling again? This started 3 weeks ago, we tried ignoring her but she just got louder and as we live in a fairly quiet area I can't really let her keep doing it so she gets her own way, they are 14 weeks old this Sunday, she can also fly/flutter a fair few metres (she's bigger than both siblings who can't) I was just wondering if anyone else has a loud girl, is it normal? and can you do anything to reduce it or know why she is like this when she has her siblings? I fully understand ducks do quack but even the other duck breeds weren't this noisy, our other little female is very quiet so is the male, they mumble quietly when they are hungry, they have free roam during the day, and a couple hours before they are shut in their shed they go into their pen (foxes are known to visit at night so can't risk leaving them out, I wondered if maybe one had frightened her in the day but with the dogs out nothing would dare come in) I also thought maybe keeping them penned may help, tried that but she still yells the same, apart from the noise she's great, they know when it's time to go into their pen without us hearding them, they even put themselves into the shed, they get on with the other animals, eat everything no problem, are healthy and seem happy otherwise, so am I overthinking, is this just generally duck owner life I'm experiencing, sort of the behind the scenes that I never saw at work 🤭 sorry it's long and thank you in advance for any advice

I have other breeds of ducks but I have some that are very loud and others that hardly say a word
Did you spend a lot of time with her ?
I’m thinking maybe she imprinted on you and that’s why she needs to see you

I agree with New Duck Mommy. My runners were kind of like that. Where they would only forage when I was out in the backyard with them during the summer. But as the school year started with my kids I can't be out there "with them" as much as earlier. It took a little bit, but they adjusted and forage even if I'm not there. But they still come and knock at the glass door to try and get our attention, but move on if I don't come out right away. Ours our 3 months now.

Not sure how to slowly get yours comfortable that you are not there all the time, especially with the loud quacking. But I think they will eventually adjust if you start a process of trying to get her more independent of you.

My females give me a loud greeting when they do see me though, and I love it 🥰

She was the first hatched and as she was the first duckling we had ever hatched we spent alot of time gazing in at her and talking to her through the top, she hatched at around 4pm on the Friday and her sister hatched at some point in the early hours of Saturday, we woke up to them cuddled together, we spent the most time with the 3rd as he was very weak he spent around 3 days after hatch in the incubator, she never really seemed that bothered with us until the quacking started x

Now you have mentioned about the foraging, they do that also, sometimes they won't touch their food at all or be bothered about it until we are out and all will start foraging through the grass or suddenly run to the food and eat, we were outside all day for 4 weeks straight while building their pen, it seemed to start shortly after finishing that, today the weather if awful, they are all huddled up, it's the quietest she has ever been lol, I honestly do love it when they all greet us after work, the way they run up the garden, it's such a lovely, beautiful sight and feeling x

This is our first year with Cayugas. We have six hens and one drake. ALL SIX HENS ARE LOUD. They quack when they notice us in the yard or even in the house window. They quack when one gets 'separated' from the group (and by 'separated,' I mean more than 20 feet away.) The quack when a crow flies overhead. And sometimes, they quack because its a rainy Tuesday or a chilly Thursday...it's just the way it is...

I traded my huge Muscovy Male that was harming my hens and drake for a 3 month old Muscovy female and a Khaki Campbell Hen. On the way home she quacked so loud that it actually hurt our ears in the vehicle. That should have been my first clue, lol. She is so loud that the neighbor at the end of my street says he can hear her but loves it Thank Heavens! I don't know her History but I think she is trying to get into the Guiness World Book of Records for being the loudest duck in the world.lol My other Khaki Campbell girl is very quiet. They all seem to be different.
