Is she always going to be this loud? She is 4 months old and a total escape artist!

Probably. She isn't very loud compared to my silly black sex links. And mine are usually only like that before they lay. I have one that will scream like that but louder for 5-15 mins before she lays. And if someone is in her box she will stand there in front of them and do the egg scream. Lol.

Oh my she isn't loud at all compared to my heckler! Chickens are loud. It is what it is. As long as they are not too bored and have enough space to roam

I agree with the other posters...that is not loud at all. She is making normal chicken sounds.

I do know that when my chickens are especially restless and noisy, it usually means they need something...more food, water, space are the first considerations...a predator the next...if those are good, then it typically is a fight over the "golden" nest box. Making sure you have adequate nesting sites and room can help, although only partially as the silly birds will always fight over a favorite one. Salting ping pong balls into other nests can help them see them as desirable too....as can changing nesting materials.

As to the escape artist, what she exhibited is normal scavenging and hunting behavior. You will have to chicken proof your yard to prevent "step ladder" up and over and squeeze through. If flight is an issue, trimming their flight feathers will help keep them grounded.

Chickens are something that does require some care and attention to help keep a happy, stable flock...and they are also not completely "silent," they are poultry after all. The only quiet pet I ever owned was a goldfish.

Your girls look lovely, and you should be getting nice eggs from them now or very shortly. And take heart...the more assertive hens are typically your best layers.

You were totally right btw! Got our very first egg today :)

Yay!!!! I knew it would be soon for you. Mine started to act like that and really wanted to find a way out of the coop that day she started making the noise. Sure enough she went in the coop and laid her egg. I think it's just them freaking out like what do I do!?!?
