Good info. Guess my location has some unique aspects. I have actually had eggs all winter with no additional lights. I will certainly try the 8 hour low light situation when I hatch some chicks and see if this will keep them from crowing. It would certainly be wonderful if that would allow me to keep them for several more weeks before butchering them.

Any ideas on how to cage the birds outside with sufficient ventilation but keeping the cage 'darker'? It gets so hot here that enclosing the birds inside of anything un-airconditioned is deadly. They do well inside the house for several weeks, but after that, they really need to be outside.

that's teh part im not helpful with LOL! like even a place you could keep them during the day light hours that's dark and then move them back into their pen at night. I dunno really!LOL!

As for GA being a special spot, I think it is really, im dumb about sun issues and global positioning, but i thnk it's safe to say since your state is warmer than mine that it gets a more extensive amount of sun? Least that's my theory on it.

I told hubby I want to move down south just so i can breed my birds year round without having to bring them inside lol!
