One of my 3 hens just died a few weeks ago. About a week ago one of my remaining hens started to squawk her head off all day long. She's molting and not producing any eggs now, so it's not the egg song. Could she be lonely/bored with only one friend left? Any suggestions? I hung a head of cabbage for them to play with and so far they are just ignoring it.

I live in NYC, so I'm desperate to stop her shrieking. She actually sounded like a rooster today!

Thanks!

She's most likely calling out for her flock mate because all she knows is they have been separated, and she wants her to come back. You could distract them with a new hen in an adjacent cage, but then they'll squawk about that for awhile.

Soo sad, poor girl! She misses her friend. It is so amazing to watch the clicks and friendships within a flock and I am a true believer that they mourn when they loose one of thier own.
