Louisiana chickens

If you don’t have goats, I’d look at converting the goat shed since the structure is already in place. Depending on your skill set, materials on hand, your tools, it could either be more or less expensive than buying one. But, you’ll have a better quality coop that fits your needs if you build yourself.

Hello and welcome! We bought a 7 x 12 ft coop from a shed company in Nashville. Not cost effective, but it saved me hours and hours of time and labor (that I don't have). Might have saved some money, particurly in shipping, if I had bought a local shed and converted it into a coop, but we're pretty frugal otherwise, and never travel or spend much on entertainment, so I thought, why not? If you're handy, and have the time to build, there are some AMAZING coops to look at for examples in the coops forum.

Saw a reference to this site on The Goat Spot and it looks good. I have had some chickens since the mid-1980's, in 4 states. I just like them, plus you get eggs.
Currently trying to get rid of 6 excess roosters, seems I accidentally got straight run this past spring:
One hen + seven roos. Keeping one rooster because the old one is really, really old.
I keep a dozen free range mixed breed hens, some bought and others homegrown plus one mean little banty hen someone must have tossed over my fence 2 months after Easter.
I am looking at different order online coops, plus at some designs. Most of my coop surrendered to the 2016 flood and I have been "making do" with a mix of doghouses and part of my goat shed.
It's time to buy or build a real coop, suggestions welcome.
I also flooded in 2016, but didn't have chickens then. Now living in Maurepas so we have space for the 5 hens we have. Happy to see someone nearby!
