"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Howdy All,

I had a talk today with the LSU-AG center Poultry expert.. One thing that might be a downer... is that any poultry brought to the show has to be certified being from a National Poultry Plan flock. She said the testing is free, but will require a blood test from the flock..

Still looking for a place.

If you find out specifics about the National Poultry Plan please pass it along. I've been thinking about that for a little while and I think in the long run it's probably a good idea to get certified.

No downer to me! I plan on getting my NPIP in the next month or so; waiting on my young hens to start laying which should be any day now. I had most of them tested last year because I was going to show in our parish fair, and they were all clear then so I don't expect any problems.

Lesalyn, I am at work & don't have any pics of my hens here, but I do have one of my wheaton Ameracauna rooster, Eagle. He is a wonderful rooster, very nice to the hens, easy breeder, and non-aggressive to humans or any other animals. I have a wheaton hen and 2 solid black Ameracauna hens - all are muffed & bearded - I had a splash roo for them but he was killed by a coyote-so there went my chances of an all blue flock who laid blue eggs, unless I can find another splash Am. roo somewhere else.

All of them were hatched from blue eggs and they all lay blue eggs. In addition to them I have a couple of olive eggers & an EE who lay big green eggs & I also will be crossing them on Eagle. I sold my Welsummer roo along with some pullets this summer with 'breeding rights' to him -- he is my 2nd generation from Channing Grisham stock & hatched from my darkest Welsummer eggs. I want to cross him back to my Wellie hens but I didn't want to keep 3 roosters. Thanks to that coyote, now I am down to just Eagle (the coyote is no longer a threat & we have greatly reinforced our coop & run).

This is Eagle:

My husband & I are both ham radio operators too! Haven't really done much with it in a long time; most of the members of our local club passed away, as did our good friend in New South Wales, Australia - Bill (VK2WCB) & his wife Joan came to the States twice just to make the rounds & visit w/everybody he talked to -- we all used to have a regular sched every Sunday afternoon. The advent of cell phones really did away with a lot of ham activity.

All you have to do to get your NPIP certification is to call your local Ag office & have the test person set up an apt. with you. I think the first time they have to test every chicken in your flock, but after that they do a random sampling each year. They take a blood sample from the veins under the wing & dot it on a piece of some sort of litmus type paper & can tell the results right there & then. Or at least that's the way she did it last year.

www.lsuagcenter.com I think has more information about NPIP here.

Gramby you wouldn't happen to have a splash Amercauana rooster you want to get rid of, do you?!

My husband's name is also Jim. His call sign is N5JDB. He has been a Ham Operator for probably more than 30 years. He loves it!

As for the Ameracauna rooster, I'm sorry I don't. My Ameracauna's are young. I bought 25 from Ideal this past spring that were supposed to be pullets, however, I ended up with a couple of roosters that I plan to keep. Last year, I had two splash blue/gray roosters but my dogs killed them. The worst predator problem I have is our own dogs.

SWEET!!!!! I'm KB5VJY On just about every band except 220. I have just moved so my tower and antennas are still on the ground.. but my Icom IC7000 is sitting here just waiting to be turned on (bought it new when we moved and only powered up once)

And on the ChickenStock (Sorry on the play of words) sounds like we can get something going on. I still have 2 contacts to call about location, I hope they have something that we can afford, which is the key. I think the Ike in West Monroe will be toooo costly, and the Monroe Civic center's livestock area as well. One area that was brought up was West Monroe's Farmers market.. outside but covered, but no meeting areas. There is another option, a feed/hardware store with plenty of parking.

Just asking, and I will give my guesstamate on down, how many people do you think will attend something like this? My idea below :

First of all, if we get the 4-H'ers involved we will have a nitch crowd of about 30-40 people there alone. Kids looking for that perfect show chicken will want to get it from a local hatcher or egg, than ordering. Second if we put notices up in every feed/hardware store including Tractor Supply, that will bring the following people:
1. people that already ENJOY chickens. Not the ones that are looking for livestock, but the ones that like chickens. You will get some of the livestock grade, but that will be fewer.
2. People that WANT to start having chickens. I believe that there are a LOT of people out there that not only had chickens and want them again, but also a lot that just want to do what I did and get a flock started. Perfect time march/april they will be laying by late September.
3. People that just want to come to look at the chickens. No matter what anyone says, there is something about chickens that people will "Flock" over. Not only are they our primary source of food, but they are a interesting, to say the least. I would guess that giving those variables, we would need an area that would be able to accept 100-200 people over a period of a day.

Sponsors? Admission? consessions? Tables? Door prizes? donate overage monies to a group/ Non For profit?

What does everyone think?

I know that this answer is not very helpful, however, I am very willing to help and excited to attend so please "BOSS" me around and let me know how to be helpful

I think that Admission fees would be acceptable, tables would be convenient, and door prizes would be fun.
