"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Anyone want any silkie roosters?

I have several I need to get rid of because I don't have hens for them. I bought them straight run in the spring, and it now that they're getting old enough to sex (these are about 9 months old), it looks like I have majority roosters.

I'm going to get an actual count this weekend, but I think I have about 7 to get rid of. They're all super cute-blue, black, and one partridge. All friendly except the partridge, who is a mean little jerk. He's amusing though, because he's all of two pounds.

I know there is one splash and one blue I'm going to keep. My little boy won "best on show" with the blue one this past fall.

Julie those are some nice looking chicks! ought to make you some fine layers & increase your egg business!

I have to put together some nesting boxes for my peas this weekend. Right now have to get to bed as tomorrow is a long day -- not at "work-work" but at 'house-work" as in the floors are despicable w/all the rain & bits & pieces of leaves, & the dogs need a bath too, so tomorrow will spend my extra day off scrubbing everything that gets in my way!!

Thanks Terri. I can't wait for them to start laying.

Quick good morning here! I'm waiting on Dad to pick Jim up & take him to his Ortho Dr apt. He's still on crutches but starting to be able to put weight on his broken (hopefully, healing)! leg. They're doing xrays this morning to see how he's doing.

Enjoying one my last "Free Fridays" before I have to start working five days a week from Jan-April -- I understand tax season is very hectic! we still are closed to the public on Fridays but we put on our jeans & sneakers & go in to play catch-up. I really like this job & although it breaks my heart to NOT go to Westminster, I'm sure not going to leave them in the hole during their busiest time of the year!

Update on my chickens -- since the demise of the evil roo last week, egg laying has picked up tremendously-- as in, from zero to six eggs this morning & best of all, most of them are pullet eggs --yes, the young ones finally have started laying!

I noticed that they used to all be in the coop & on the roosts by 5:00-- as soon as I got home from work & changed I would go lock them up for the night--well, they evidentally were hurrying to bed early to get away from the evil roo, because now they happily wander around outside until it's totally dark -- I didn't lock them up until almost 6:00 yesterday. So I am still satisfied that I made the right decision to go "roo-less".

OK time to go mop my kitchen, dining room, utility room & hall floors so they'll dry before Jim gets back & he wont' slip on them! It's been raining here & everything's so slippery!

Risotto with shrimp & asparagus tonight for supper!

Terri, I think you're on to something when you say that egg laying picked up. I have had on several occasions in the past when I had too many roosters, the egg laying decreased. And as soon as I got rid of the roosters, the egg laying picked up. I think it stressed the hens out. I'm glad that you mentioned that. That kinda confirmed that roosters and stress play an important role in egg laying. I think some of my girls were even scared to come out of the coop to go and eat because they were harrassed at the feeders and couldn't eat. I caught 1 more bad boy rooster last night and I have one more to catch. He decided to be a smarty pants and sleep in the tree last night. I think he knows what's going on. Little does he know, I will get a ladder and get his butt out of the tree. So, I think that brings my total up to 13 roosters that I have to process.

Great decision to go "roo-less" Terri. I"m right there with you.

I'm scared of silkies.

Really? Why? Mine are big babies (except that one). My kids can carry them around like puppies. They're pretty useless, really, but people love them. They're definitely just pets, though. If this was an abundance of another breed, they'd be going to freezer camp, but we don't eat silkies here.

Well, you may not want to know why I'm scared of them.
