Well I just ordered my Christmas present to me -- a brinsea Octagon & auto-turner!

Now I'm going to go buy a hanging feeder for the peas for THEIR Christmas present! since I spotted a mouse in their feeding station yesterday.

Have a good one everybody! we are going to make spritz cookies here today (Jim's 87 yr old Mom's recipe) and also some pizzelles.

Hello to all,
New Louisiana member here from Avoyelles Parish - Simmesport, to be exact. I'm in the process of building my coop before ordering any chicks this spring. Had chickens growing up and want my kids to have the experience too, not to mention the great meat and eggs! I've noticed that there aren't any hatcheries in our state and precious few (that I've been able to find) breeders. I'd love to some day get into some "heritage" chickens that are bred to the standard. Maybe I could even get into showing chickens with my kids. I'm mostly interested in the large fowl, dual purpose types such as the various Plymouth Rocks, RIR's, Wyandottes, Orpingtons, and etc. What are some of the varieties that you other LA people have had success with? Any types to avoid based on our summer heat? Are there any people here who are raising chickens to the standard?

- Davy

Gald that you found the Louisiana thread. You will enjoy the peeps on this thread. A great bunch here.

You're right. No hatcheries in Louisiana. The closest hatchery is Ideal Poultry in Texas. I just ordered 40 RIR pullets. I have a small egg business and I needed more layers. I couldn't keep up with egg orders. Some of the breeds that I really like are RIR, New Hampshire, Barred Rocks, Black Australops and Buff Orpingtons. I have had good luck with all of these breed as far as the summer heat. Just takes extra effort to make sure that they have plenty of shade and cool water.

Good luck with your chicken coop. Can't wait to see pics.

Alot of us on this thread have heritage breeds. I have Dominique, Delaware, and buff Orpingtons along with several other breeds.
All my birds are close to standard as I can get em

Good luck with your pen and search.

Welcome!! we are a fine bunch here! & several of our members have the breeds you are interested in.
I've had good success with Rocks, Welsummers & Ameracaunas here -- I'm sure the others will chime in with their experiences. Was raising Welsummers to standard -- my flock lines go back to a very old closed flock -- toying with the idea of reviving them, but I really am concentrating more on my peacocks this coming year.

You can have the heavier coated breeds but you MUST have a lot of shade & water to keep them cool, or they will overheat easily. My Blue Andulasians (hatched from Okiehen, a BYCer) did really well but predators picked them off one by one - I only have one left. I have to say they did lay even in the worst summer heat.

I fully intend to post pictures of my coop and etc once they are underway or built. Don't hold your breath for them till after the holidays though. I'll likely start around mid-January on the building. Thanks for all the quick support from you other La folks. I look forward to sharing knowledge with you.

I'm in Sulphur, Calcasieu Parish. I am working with the RIRs trying to breed to standard. I have several that are very dark mahogany. I also have Coronation Sussex and Lavendar Orpingtons that are gorgeous.

Hey guys!!! I have some birds that I'm looking to sell if anyone is interested...

I have 3 Colombian Wyandotts that are about 3 1/2 months old, I'll have to check to be sure on that, I may be a little off but should be close and also 3 Buff Orpingtons the same age. These six birds came from a hatchery and I would like to try and get $5.00 ech. for them.

I also have 9 Buff Orpingtons that I hatched on Thanksgiving day. These birds are not hatchery birds but came from Hot2Pot on here. In fact, I think she has another listing running right now for eggs. These will go for $2.00 per chick.

I can sell these birds all together or just one at a time, it makes no difference to me. If you want them all...make me an offer!!!

I also have some Barred Rocks that will be hatching this week as well. With them, I may also have a few Light Sussex hatch this week. These were eggs that I got off of e-bay from a breeder of SQ birds.

Anyway, whatever I have left after the holidays will be going to my local feed store to for them to sell for me, so you have some time to think about it or ask any questions that you may have!!!!

Anyway, let me know if anyone of you may be interested in anything I have and I can hold them for you until after the holidays if you need me to. However, I do need to make room for both some chicks I'm going to be hatching in the next two weeks and also for some other chicks I have on order from two different breeders so please don't wait to long.

Thanks in advance,
Chris
