"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Wow, No one posted anything about the Sale / Swap that was today in Covington?????

Well I'll start....There was a Chicken Sale / Swap today in Covington that Brandi put together and I must say for the first time doing this and for the first one that I know of that was held in Covington, I think that it was a huge success! I could not get over how many people were there both to sell and to buy..... it was a packed house! I couldn't get the birds out of my truck fast enough!!! I sold three birds while unpacking, lol! It was crazy!!!! I bought a pair of birds and could have sold them three times after I bought them. One guy bought some birds from me and people kept asking him about buying them and finally someone offered him a price that I told him he would be crazy not to take.....so he re-sold them and almost doubled his money. I just wished that I would have had more birds to sell.

Again....great job Brandi and I look forward to doing it again!!!

Chris

Sounds like everyone had a great time. :clap

I've had one of the best hatches ever!! I set 13 Golden Cuckoo Marans eggs, put 13 on lockdown (Well one was cracked but I put it in there anyway!) Out of the other 12, 11 have hatched and only 2 males out the bunch!! :yesss:  I

'm hoping by the time I get home this morning it will have hatched. The hubs thinks he saw a pip on it so we'll see!! :fl

Congrats on the hatch. :clap

Probably not but I really don’t know. That would be a good idea to try and enforce on down the road if this event continues. I personally only had one bird that came back to the house and two that I picked up there. I just put them all in quarantine for the next few weeks just to be on the safe side so really no big deal for me.
I tell you what though….it was a lot of fun and much bigger than I expected it to be. I saw rabbits, goats, a lamb, turkeys, quail, pheasants as well as a ton of chickens. I even ended up selling some cages that I made for my birds, some old waterers and 7 chickens. If I would have had more Silkies with me, I would have sold every one. Brandi did a great job at her first attempt at this and their already planning the next one.

I doubt that will ever happen guys as you only have to be NPIP if you're going to be selling chicks commercially. You see why I say it's a big deal to be made of, now when you brought those chicks/chickens onto your place the NPIP on the others is all out the window. I don't see the effort for what it's worth. Just sayin'

. Mrs. kathyinmo has sent out chicks all over the USA and not a one is NPIP and do you think that has slowed down her business she is so far behind she'll never get all her orders filled,

Anyway good day everbody

Jeff,
I agree and can take it even one step further if you want….According to the State Vet, I could simply just go to the sale/swap and walk around. I would not have to buy anything just go back home afterwards. By doing this I could contaminate my flock.
I’m not about to start wearing disposable booties at shows or have people wear them at my place, that’s just crazy. If it happens it happens I’ll just do the best I can within reason and hope for the best.

Oh I know Chris alot of people probly don't even think about what in the world is just sitting there lurking to jump on you at the local feed and seed supply either. It truly is a survival of the fittest game and only the strong survive in the real world, I don't worry too much cause I know good strong bred birds can tolerate this and that, and if an epidemic hits all are at risk anyway. Just one of those deals as they say.

I know that things will happen and our animals get sick but I try my best to protect them from any illnesses or diseases. I know that we cannot control what happens but I feel that we play a part in the health of our animals. I do not let people onto my property (I don't have a people friendly yard-by personal choice- I don't like having visitors anyway) without them putting on blue shoe covers that I provide for them to wear. Most of the people that come to my house are customers coming to buy eggs or whatever it is I am selling and most of them have chickens. Because I have not been to their house to see how they care for their animals, I do not trust that their animals are 100% disease and illness free. I simply explain to them that I am NPIP certified and I am advised not to let ANYONE walk around in the chicken yard or the area my animals free range for fear of droppings or transferring other diseases to my yard. I have not had a problem at all and no one has refused and I have had returning customers. Once I tell them, they are amazed and tell that that what I am doing is a good thing. In fact, the idea that I am NPIP and word is out that I am VERY "clean" is where I get my customers. The first thing that I am told is that someone told them about me and told them how clean my cages, coops and chicken yard are. I have a little over 250 animals and I have invested a lot of time and money and I consider them a wise investment. I try to provide them the best care and protection possible. Now there are some things that I can't control as far as wild birds, raccoons, opossums and other wild rodents coming into my yard and leaving infected or diseased droppings, so those are situations that I can't worry about (but I still do) and the State Vet tells me this as well.

The shoes that I wear are only for my yard and chicken yard. I do not wear any of these shoes to the feed store or anywhere else. I remove all store clothes when I get home because there are only certain OLD clothes that I wear in the yard anyway. It's a habit, so I don't think twice about. It's just a routine. When I go to someone's house that has animals, I bring my own shoe covers. I respect that person enough to not put their chickens or other animals in jeopardy and because I don't want anything entering my truck from the bottom of my shoes and me transferring that to my yard. Sure, some people may say that it's over kill and everyone has their opinion.

I have only attended 1 chicken show and that was the one in Monroe and I didn't allow those shoes to touch my yard or chicken yard. That is the only chicken show that I have attended and I don't expect to attend too many because I don't really purchase chickens from other people. I'm too scared.

I'm not taking any chances. If anything wiped out my 126 chickens, 13 Geese, 13 BR Turkeys (8 poults), 49 Muscovy Ducks (6 ducklings), 24 guinea keets and 4 Peafowl because I wasn't careful and let my guard down, I would be devastated. :hit

I have customers call me and tell me that they lost their entire flock because of some sickness and want to buy some chickens from me. I just cringe in fear.

Everyone will have their own opinion about NPIP, precautions, what to do, what not to do, etc. It's a personal choice and I respect everyone's views but for me, I can't take that chance to let my guards down. Someone on this forum (I posted the link in my other post) did and he had to kill every single one of his birds because of it. I don't want to have a Part 2 to his post. :/
