"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning! How is everybody? Already hot & humid here.

I can't believe how consistent my peahen White Spot is in laying -- she lays exactly every 2 days, exactly at 8:10 pm. Yesterday I left the egg out there in her chosen nesting spot to see if (A) it would spark any kind of broody behavior and (B) entice Vishnu to also start laying. So far, no luck.

They are all walking around totally ignoring the egg. I'll give it 'till this evening & see. I can't add any more to my Brinsea -- but I can fire up my old Hovnabator & gather eggs for a week & start them in that....

Then when the 1st hatch is ready, move them to the Hova & put the pea eggs in the Brinsea.

Then when the 2nd hatch is due, by then I'll have the 1st hatch in the brooder so can move those 2 eggs into the Hova to hatch. Then repeat for the 3rd hatch.........to infinity & beyond!

PM'ing you Julie -- if you have room & want to set some more you can have what I gather that would hatch the week while I'm in St. Louie--I have to go check the calendar & do some counting backwards to see what week that would be. To collect them, I mean.

I'm SO glad this is my "Friday" -- tomorrow I will be up to my ears in kosher dill pickles!

Ok everyone, I have some good news and some bad news. I will start with the bad news first and then tell you the good news.

The bad news is that I took some pics on yesterday but I forgot my camera at home.

Now on to the good news.......................................

I have a pea chick that hatched on yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:weee :celebrate :ya :bun :jumpy :cd :yiipchick :yesss: :highfive:

When I got home on yesterday and checked my broody hens, I picked up a hen and noticed that she was only sitting on 1egg. It appeared that 1 of the eggs was missing from a hen that was setting on 2 pea eggs. I immediately became disappointed because I thought that my murdering hens had cracked open another egg and ate it. As I raised her up a little more, I saw a perfectly hatched egg with no chic. I got disappointed yet again because now I'm thinking that my thuggish hens and turkeys came into the hen house and dragged the baby out of the nesting box and killed it. As I felt under her more, I saw a fuzzy butt pointed right at me. The fuzzy butt fell from the back of the hen and lo and behold it was a PEA BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:weee :celebrate :ya :bun :jumpy :cd :yiipchick :yesss: :highfive:

I was soooooooooooooo happy. It must have hatched throughout the day because it wasn't there on the previous night nor was it there when I checked that morning. It was fully dry. It's BIG!!!!!!!!! And the feathers look like that of a 2 week old chicken. Terri, the wing feathers are LONG !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked to see such a difference in a chicken, turkey and pea chick. And the feet are HUGE!! It reminds me of a 13 year old that wears a size 17 shoe. :gig

So, I immediately took it and brought it inside and put it in my brooder. Since it will be alone for now, I had to get out the marbles to put them in the water and feed to try to convince it to eat. At 9:00 PM, it kept chirping and didn't want to settle down. I know that it can go without food and water for a couple days but I didn't want to take the chance I boiled a guinea egg for it and put the yoke in the brooder. As soon as I set that yolk down, it TORE IT UP !!!!!!!!!! The poor little fella was hungry. Gosh, it had only hatched earlier that day. I thought it shouldn' t he that hungry. So Terri, keep an eye on your pea chics as far as how soon they begin eating. Anyway, after it ate the yolk, it stopped chirping. So, he took a nap and was up piddling around. I was a nervous wreck all night worrying about the little fella.

I woke up this morning and he was up and at'em. I picked up some of the yolk that was still in it's brooder and it began to eat out of my hand. :love He is sooooooo cute!!

I wish that he had a pea buddy. Maybe the other eggs will hatch and he can have a buddy. I have 3 pea eggs from the original bunch still under my broody hens and have added more pea eggs under some hens. The pea eggs in the incubator are scheduled to hatch on the 15th. Terri, when is lock down for your pea and guinea eggs? Humidity in the incubator has been great. It's registering between 43-50. I am soooooooooooooooooo hoping all of the pea eggs hatch. :fl

I wished for at least 1 pea egg to hatch and it did. So, if no others hatch, I'm ok with that.

I will post pics of the little fella on tomorrow.

Thanks to all who wished me good wishes and luck on the pea eggs. This little fella heard you.

Good morning Terri. I was hoping you were on so that you could hear the good news about my hatched pea. So, it looks like all of the eggs are fertile so far Terri. I think that mine are averaging every 2 days as well Terri. I am sooooo happy for you Terri. I know that you have been patiently waiting for eggs. GOOD JOB GIRLS !!!!!! :thumbsup

I would love to get more eggs and put in the incubator!!! Just let me know and I can schedule a trip over to your place. :ya

This gives me a VERY good EXCUSE, oops, I mean reason to start production on yet ANOTHER pea aviary/flight pen/Tropical Oasis for more peas. :gig I'm thinking tropical colors with so much sand and hanging plants. My builder is going to strangle me when I break the good news to him.

Good luck with the pickles Terri.

Depending on how the guinea eggs do in your incubator, if you need more eggs when you get back from St. Louis, let me know and I can give you some more guinea eggs. We can keep trying until you get what you want. The guinea girls are laying about 10 eggs a day now. :th Can someone say pickled eggs? That's a thought Terri, would you like some guinea eggs to do pickled eggs? If so, let me know and I can get you some fresh eggs for pickling. The guinea eggs are small enough for a nice snack throughout the day. Just pop one in your mouth. :drool

I am SO happy for you (& nervous for me, lol)!!! thanks for the tips!

Let's see (checking calendar).................I think lockdown is June 13th.

I had a lone chick hatch one time & I put a little stuffed toy animal in there & it snuggled up to it, so you might try that so it won't be as lonely. I also put a battery operated radio next to the brooder so it had something to listen to during the day.

Thanks Terri. I will mark my lock down as yours since I think we set the pea eggs at the same time. I have Purina Game Bird Startena 30% protein for the pea chick and will feed that from here on out until it graduates to the next level.

Terri, what is your humidity looking like with the pea and guinea eggs?

I had a lone chick hatch one time & I put a little stuffed toy animal in there & it snuggled up to it, so you might try that so it won't be as lonely. I also put a battery operated radio next to the brooder so it had something to listen to during the day.

Ok great!!! I will pick up a small toy animal and I have a radio. Thanks for the tip.

If I get a good hatch out of the guinea eggs, I will have more than enough guineas, thanks!

I'm holding the humidity at mid-40s -- when it drops to 40 I add a little hot water & bump it up a little. I don't like it too high - we have so much *natural* humidity here anyway - & I am afraid of drowning chicks (made that mistake when I first started incubating).

I used the Purina gamebird starter on the girls when I got them & also the boys for a couple of months; it's a good feed.

Ok great!!!

It was at 43 this morning and I added room temp water but will do as you said and will had a little hot water.

You use the Flight/Conditioner with the Adult peas right? Or what do you use? And you get that at Petrus? I may have to make a special trip to your feed store and pick up the same thing.

Right now the adults are fed a mixture of gamebird crumble, laying crumble and cracked corn, also have a big pan of oyster shell in there & another pan I put veggies or fruits out for them. They get bread, oatmeal, pasta (love pasta, you can tell they are in our Italian family, lol) for treats.
