"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Any of you guys interested in some pigeons, recently aquired 8 of them. They are very nice looking. One all white and the rest are blue bars. I think there either homing or tumbler not too sure but leaning toward homing. I'm up for trades. Let me know if anyone is interested
confirmed they are homing pigeons.

I know nothing about pigeons, so I would have to do some research to see what requirements are needed, flight pens, etc.

Why do people own pigeons? :idunno

hmmm, some like watching them fly. Some race them, good to eat(squab), and I hear they are leas maintenance than chickens

Gracie, here are some updated pics of my goslings.

This pic is of the buff saddleback and splash gosling that I'll be keeping for myself. I don't yet know their gender. Both the splash and the solid white in the middle are from your female.

This is a pic of the other splash gosling (on left). It has very little color now because most of the color has already turned white. An interesting thing about this gosling is that there is a single black feather on the wing. Perhaps a saddleback carrier? I wasn't able to get a picture of it to show you because it was moving around too much.

Here is a pic of this same splash gosling upclose to show the color on the back. I'm not sure of the color -- light color.

I think both of your splashes will molt out to be almost completely white. I'm very interested in the splash #2! I guess we will figure out what to pair him/her with when they are sexed. The splash looks like typical juvenile white feathering. The black feather may indicate a color carrier though! I really wish my white girl would venture out into the pasture. Her beak is not nearly as orange as yours, and I credit it to her only wanting to eat what the chickens eat! She is fat and in good health though. I would just like to diversify her diet!

BTW, I like the feminine looking head on the smooth in the first picture. Beautiful bird!

Anyone with experience in sick chicks? My 2 month old welsummer was not moving much and acting lethargic. Picked her up and noticed one of her eyes is cloudy! Separated her from flock already. Anyone have any idea on what it may be?

Everyone,
I just posted an idea at:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/666481/2012-louisiana-chickenstocks-shows-and-meet-ups/10
I would like to see if anyone in south/south west Louisiana would be interested in participating in a Backyard mock show/swap/picnic. If you don't feel like clicking over, here's a copy of my post...

" I've been doing some research and reaching out to a few people who have experience putting new groups together in other areas across the country.
I am trying to get my thoughts organized right now.
Doris Robinson the APA-ABA YOUTH POULTRY CLUB-National Director/Coordinator said,
"One thing is having a place to hold the show, cages to put the birds in and then getting the paperwork together (that I can help you with). It’s pretty expensive when you have to either rent or purchase cages. Another way is to start out having a “Barnyard Fun Days Poultry show” and is a very popular way to start out. Of course you need a good sized area for people to park and have room to set up the cages. Everyone brings their own cages and you use those as the show cages (only one bird per cage and you need to make sure everyone understands that) because sometimes they’ll crowd 3-5 birds in one cage to carry them around. lol You can hold a picnic and charge each person for eating at the picnic. then your group buys the hot dogs & burgers, cooks them and the rest of you bring the salads, chips & dessert. It’s usually lots of fun and everyone enjoys getting together and talking chickens. That group grows and you get everyone to join your new club and become volunteers to work to putting a real show together."
I think her idea on a Barnyard Fun Day would be fun. Have like a mock show, possibly get a judge to come in and evaluate our birds, have a swap/trade, and then food. I know they just held something like this in Texas, but I cannot remember what site I found that on and who to contact to see how their's went...
Maybe I am over-reaching what yall are interested in doing, but my long term goal would to be have a little poultry club here in south Louisiana and hold a few shows a year that could include buying/selling/trading poultry and poultry items. I would love to team up with some of the 4-H groups (which I will be helping with at the school I teach at in the fall) or Junior Show groups.
I have no personal experience showing poultry, but am very interested. I have a lot of experience showing horses and some showing pigs. I am willing to learn and would love to be able to have a groups of people interested in the same.”

We are still looking for people who are interested in poultry events. I know there are a few in north Louisiana, but I would love to get something put together for south Louisiana. I believe starting with a “fun day” or what not would be a good way to try and round up some involvement…
If anyone has any suggestions or would like to help, please, please, please let me know! Feel free to comment here or there.

Kuntrygirl, a friend of mine keeps pigeons. They have roosts in the run and stay out there 24/7. Their nests were purposely made up under the roof of the fake porch on their coop. Next time I go over there I will take pictures for you. They do well with the chickens and ducks. I'm not sure what kind she has, but I think they are very pretty. Their family eats the eggs and while they are smaller than a chicken egg, they taste much sweeter. A bit flighty, but can be caught with not too much difficulty.
