"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning!

I'm trying to get information out about the Acadiana District Livestock Show (Lafayette, LA, on Jan 23-26). It will INCLUDE exhibition poultry (no broilers) for the first time in MANY years!  Someone from the WBR 4-H office called me yesterday to see if my son would be interested in showing.  This may not be continued in future years if there isn't enough interest, so please...if you know someone in that district, let them know!

The Acadiana District includes the following parishes: Iberia, Iberville, Lafayette, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, & West Baton Rouge.  I have the entry forms if anyone is interested...they need to be submitted to the parish 4-H offices immediately.

I wasn't aware of anything like that in Lafayette but will try to get info for you. Thanks for posting.

Yup, I have been a few times. Sometimes the turnout is better than others... but we usually get most everything sold.
Yeah, I agree sometimes it's good and other times not as much. I think the weather has a lot to do with it. And I don't recall seeing any pigs, but I've seen goats and rabbits there. I've never been to the sale in Breaux Bridge. I'd like to go and check that one out too!

Maddi will probably be interested in this. We were just talking about that the other day wondering if they ever had any shows around the Acadiana area.

Is this who I think it is?

That's Gate who had several varieties - Sicilian Buttercups I remember.

Sounds like fun - I'd come just to watch but my Dad is having cataract surgery on the 23rd plus that's Jim's birthday, so we'll be tied up at home.

I would be interested, but I don't live or work in that district

I live in Allen Parish and teach in Jeff Davis Parish, so all my 4-H stuff is through Jeff Davis Parish.

I know we do not have exhibition poultry in Jeff Davis parish, our only option is showing broilers... That's why I started my Wing Buddy program, at our school, with the broilers and hope that we can slowly move towards exhibition, in the hope one day it will come to our Parish...
I know plenty of kids who would love to participate in poultry exhibition if it were an option here!

Good morning La-yers -- chilly & bleak here. I'm not complaining though - I checked the weather of family & friends & my friend in NYC is battling 30 & light snow/sleet & my MIL in Wisconsin is at a balmy 19 & the high today to be 32. Oh yeah, they can have that & keep it there!

Hey Jeff did your New Hamps ever start laying yet? depending on how my hatch goes next week, I might do one more batch. I candled & spotted some clears in my RIRs so maybe my roo has too many hens to keep up with. Couldn't spot anything in the Welsummers but they're shipped eggs anyway so it all depends on luck of the USPS.

My cousin dismantled his fall decorations so all the poultry got many pumpkins which made them very happy, plus 2 bales of hay.

Two of my Ameracaunas have become very, very bad chickens - they have taken to roosting somewhere outside at night & not coming in w/the flock. I looked around w/a flashlight last night but they are both wheaton color & blend in so well I couldn't spot them. This morning for the 2nd time they were hanging arount outside the run, waiting for me to open the gate so they could go in w/the rest when I opened the coop for the day. Very foolish idea on their part as we've been hearing a lot of owls lately.

Have a good one everybody!
Hey there Terri and the rest of ya'll La-yers and Byc-ers too
frow.gif

Terri I'm only getting about 6 to 12 eggs a day right now(from all of them/150ish or so
hmm.png
) my girls are taking a break/resting I reckon, LOL

So next week is the beginning of Dec. and coming up on the shortest daylight hours I'm going to give everbody a good de-worming and start them on a little higher protein diet for a month or so to get the ball back bouncing again. I don't feed them it too long as I can't justify the difference in feed prices for no more than I can get for the eggs anyway. But as soon as they get back in gear I will let you know and you will probly get the first bunch of eggs I have, as I won't be ready till late Feb/early Mar. to start up my hatching, I like to hatch closer to reg. season than too early, its too much trouble to keep them warm (cold nights/warm days) unless you are there 24/7 to regulate temps. Hav'nt forgot you, will keep you updated and #1 on the NH list.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger -- I'm only getting 1-2 or even ZERO from my 15 girls.
