"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Today I am going to try my hand at hatching. . . (First time nerves)

I've made a homemade incubator and tested for temp control and humidity so I think I'm ready.

I'm not sure what I will get in my hatch, assuming it's succesful

, but I have an EE roo over laced wyndotts silver & gold, and one B.O which are the only hens laying throughout their molt.

Is it nessesary to turn the eggs 3 times a day? It seems a bit much, but then I have NO experience whatsoever so any advice would be appreciated. =0)
http://www.mypetchicken.com/hatching-eggs/guide-toc.aspx is a great site that will give you information on hatching eggs, anything related to chicken questions are in their site, hope this helps! you want to turn them two to three times a day making sure to keep the larger side with the air pocket up. good luck on your new adventure, keep us posted please!

  1. Turn eggs until Day 18, and then stop to allow the chicks to position themselves properly for hatching.
  2. When turning eggs manually, your hands must be washed and clean before each session to avoid transferring bacteria and oils onto the surface of the egg.
  3. Eggs should be turned a minimum of three times per day at regular intervals--five is even better! Some people like to lightly draw an X on one side of the egg so they can more easily keep track of which eggs have been turned. Otherwise it is easy to lose track of which have been turned, and whether they have been turned all the way over or not.
  4. Eggs should be placed in the turner large end up. If you have an automatic turner and you think it may not be working, don't be immediately alarmed! Turners move slowly but regularly throughout the day and you will not "see" them moving by watching. Wait a few hours before checking again, and chances are good the difference in position of your turner will be obvious by then.

I have also seen that people use egg cartons with just the bottom cups in their incubator to hold the eggs in place, laying on their sides with larger end more up.

We have two 30 yr old fig trees - they're huge - & the chickens are let out to free range every day - they do an outstanding job of eating up all the figs that fall on the ground & sometimes my crazy Ameracaunas will fly up in the lower branches & snag a few, but none of them has ever gotten sick off the figs. In fact, it's wonderful - they keep the ground cleaned up & well tilled under the trees - we don't even have to mow it!
Thanks Terri and Kuntrygirl! Now I know where I will plant the fig tree as part of my chicken yard landscaping. I bought it a year ago at Lowe's and just set it in the yard in the black plastic bucket it comes in and it has been strong and happy, so I guess it's a good tree. It's a win-win, me and the girls will both be happy.

A sale huh? Music to my ears. I forgot what I have. :gig I may have to step it up a notch and go big big. LOL :lau

What is an octagon?....I mean, I know what an octagon is:  8 sided figure, right?  LOL But, what is one related to chickens??  Thanks!!!

Octagon is a type of incubator by Brinsea. Try to google Brinsea octagon incubator and you should see it.

Finally got BYC to load again lol

Julie might as well go on and break that ancient piggy bank out and get you a good cabinet bator. At least it will be the last one you will ever need :)

I still need a purple peacock.
