Is she going thru molt now or has been in molt sometimes the comb will wither up and seem to curl up and get lighter pinkish and dull/not waxy as you describe when the girls are molting if not maybe check for parasites/worms infestation maybe IDK? chicken problems are so hard to diagnose on-line

Hope everybody had a good Christmas I'm full as a tick too. everbody please whisper a much needed Christmas prayer and well wishes for a speedy recovery, my sister slipped down the wet steps this morning (wearing flip flops) carrying her 55 lb. 7 year old out to the car so she wouldn't get here new bunny slippers wet and broke her leg right above the ankle, broke the tibia into and fractured the fibula they got it Xrayed in Leesville but had to make a journey via car ride to LSU in Shreveport to get examined and await a surgery time/date they say a orthopedic Dr. is hard to see now as they have had multi wet road wrecks up there today/tonight and will be some time before she can see one much less get tended to. Merry Christmas to sis.

just got the phone call they are gonna set it then splint it and she's gonna have to wait for the swelling to subside some so she has a date on the 3rd to go back, man! thats a long time of suffering,

Oh good Lord Jeff! -- that sounds like us last year when Jim slipped on the dog's stuffed toy & broke his leg in two places & spent a year in various casts & so forth -- I am so sorry for your sister & will definitely keep her in our prayers - we definitely know what a long row to hoe she has facing her...

Hopefully we all escaped this bad weather this afternoon --- winds are still just fierce as all get out... but time to go to bed & the animals all are safe & hunkered down for the coming cold spell.

Terr, I have an extra large mirror that stands 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I already have mirrors in the pea pen. Not sure if you have or use mirrors in your pea pen but if you are interested in a mirror, please let me know. I have one that you can have. I can bring it to you on my next feed run to Petrus.

lol Julie -- my Mom just told me the other day she has one the same size that is out at their tractor shed & offered it to me. I've never tried putting a mirror in the pea pen before but might do so -- what do yours do with it - display to it? Might be fun to try it out & see how they react. (as long as they don't try & fight it or anything).

You mean that you have NEVER tried a mirror in the pea pen!!!!!????? OMG!!!!!!!!! That is pea fowl abuse over there. LOL Believe it or not, they walk in front of it and stand in front of it and look at themselves. And the boys fan in front of it and the girls look at them. It is SO funny to see. Guineas are also known to look at themselves in the mirror. You should try it. It is a sight to see.

No, they won't fight it. Mine know that it's them in the mirror. They look at it like we as humans do. They love it. I have 3 in the big flight pen. One on the outside and 2 on the inside.

Good morning everyone. I hope that everyone had a great holiday and time off from work. My time off was cleaning, cleaning and cleaning. I'm relieved to know that my chicken house, chicken stalls, brooders, nesting boxes, feeders, waterers and everything else is cleaned. All hay has been replaced in all of the nesting boxes and all hidden nests (turkey eggs) have been found. Those girls are at it AGAIN!!!!

With all of the rain over the course of the last few months, the sheep pen was a disaster. I had to shovel the pen and I was NOT a happy camper. But now the sheep have a dry area. Well after last night's rain, I'm not too sure about that. Here are just a few pics of the start of the job. There were hills of mud alongside the sheep pen when I was done. There has got to be a better way. Well, with the new sheep pen on the outside of the chicken yard built, this will help out with this mess. I also started trimming the hooves of some of the sheep. The easy part was catching them and tieing them up so that I could keep them restrained to trim their hooves. I was able to find an excellent hoof trimmer on ebay that was as sharp as a knife. It was a nice clean trim. The pedicure and manicures and soakings have commenced. :/

I was able to take a few pics of the peas and also caught one of the girls fanning. I guess she was tired of seeing the boys fan and she wanted to strut her stuff too.

Now if the weather could clear up and dry up the chicken yard. :/

I just love my peas. The boys still have more to go as far as their tails growing. I hope within the next year, they will have their full tails. I can't wait.

Okay, guys...I am SUFFERING! My main flock is kept in one large run with an enclosed coop--these are my egg birds. I had not had one problem out of their health. I had added some newbies back in October. No problems. Then just over two weeks ago, two of the newer little guys died. I assumed it was the cold snap and they were small with no meat on them. I decided to worm them all just in case. I did follow my usual routine of cleaning the coop daily. The following week--FOUR of my grown birds died within two days. That was when I saw the pattern--the droopy feathering and the lethargy I had assumed was from the cold before, but was now warm. I started the Corid certain that I was now dealing with cocci even though I'd seen no bloody stool. From the time they began to look like they were moving a little too slow to death has been less than 48 hours. I took a fecal sample to Dr. Brandon in Leesville and, sure enough, it was cocci.

As of this past Saturday, they had been on the Corid for the 5 day run. All the birds looked fine. I had since cleaned all the litter out of the coop, put in fresh, kept raking it out daily, and made sure the Sweet PDZ in the poop hammock was kept clean. Sterilized the feeder and waterers. Thought I had made it over the hump. Then we get the rain and the cold. I go out this morning--and ANOTHER of the young newer ones is lethargic and pale. I made another corid solution for her and fed it to her with a syringe--she does not look like she'll make it through the day. I do not know what to do here! I'm afraid to move them near any other birds since they've all been exposed, and I have the state coming Monday for my NPIP. I'm thinking they all now need a good system flush to push out any cocci that may still be building up. I read in one university study posted somewhere on BYC to mix their feed with yogurt, small amount of milk, and vitamins to make a mash and that should help flush them out. I give them yogurt weekly. I also give the apple cider vinegar once weekly, but haven't in the past few since I've been giving the Corid. Any other suggestions here? I don't think I can stand to lose any more of those birds in that run.

Anyone here thinking with me that the newer birds may have brought it in? They had spent 30 days in quarantine, then put in the main coop. The first ones to die from the cocci did well for over a month in the coop. Ideas anyone? Should I just keep them all together and relocate them to another coop, but still away from others? Or do I leave them there hoping the ones surviving will have immunity built up?!?!?!

Looks like at least 3 turkey hens are using that nest, too!

Now, Kuntrygirl, What would you ever do, with all that time, if everything got caught up???!!!
