"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Horstman RIRs and German New Hampshires. Terrie I'll have to get the Barred Rock pullets out of the RIR pen(unless you want a chance on some BSLs from the RIRx BR cross) or do some chicken sitting(which is a good thing in my book,LOL) to get you straight RIR eggs as they are penned together at the moment. Maybe by the time the GNH girls "get ta' kickin' it in gear", I can get/have them separated, which I need to do anyway. I'm going to be trading some BR eggs for some awesome Columbian Rock eggs from a guy in AR. LOL just what I need more like I need another hole in the head huh? LOL then when I get those up and going I'm going to get White Rock eggs from J-whip then I'll have all of what I need/or want for now, maybe. I know I need an intervention,LOL it all sounds good though.

Jeff
and don't forget you need to get that peacock pen finished too!

When they start laying....I will have

White Marans

Golden Cuckoo Marans

Wheaten, Lav, Blk Ameraucana

Penciled Rocks

Columbian Rocks

Cream Legbar

Bantam Columbian

My next scheduled trip to BR is near the end of April -- if your cream legbars are laying then I'd love to get some from you! I'll PM you when the time gets closer.

I will keep you posted!

My BLRWs from Jerry Foley are finally laying and in a breeding pen. I'm dying to pop a few eggs in the bator, but they haven't been separated long enough.

They are getting huge! Excuse the messy pen. Now that everything is dried out, they'll be getting a good scrubbing! :)

Hi all. Just finished reading the last few pages in the thread, to get to know everyone a little.

I'm in Baton Rouge, as in close to the Lakehouse off of Old Hammond, by the old golf course that's been shut down forever. Or, close to Old Hammond & Flannery, whichever sounds better.

Having said that... I remember reading last year about only being able to have like 3 or 4 chickens if I live in city limits? I tried looking today, and I couldn't find the url where I'd read that.
So... anyone around here know the rules on how many non-dogs/cats I can have?

My yard isn't very large, but three sides of it have like 7'+ brick walls for fences, and the back fence faces the field that was once a gold course; so, I have a lot of privacy. I don't want to get in over my head, I DO want to start off small and slow; but, I tend to get carried away.

Whatever I have needs to not be excessively loud or smelly. My goals are to be able to have meat/protein in my diet without having to resort to factory meats. I have two (koi) ponds which don't really have any fish (one has a group of crawfish that show up in the summer time); I was thinking i could incorporate one (or both) for ducks or something.

Last year I started gardening. Think I've semi-got the hang of that. I have what amounts to a small rose garden, herb garden, various veggies in random places throughout the year, and several fruit trees and bushes.

Ok, that was a whole lot of different things I through out there. Not sure if this is the right place for ALL those questions; but, the amounts of critters I can have would be a great starting point for my future self-sustainable planning. Thanks in advance! you guys already sound very friendly and helpful!

Hi and welcome. I'm not sure bout your area but I can suggest that you check with city ordinances. I am limited to 16 birds. That would be a place to start. Good luck

Your local city council or animal control department can verify, but I believe in city limits of BR it is the following:

Restrictions: maximum of 3 chickens, no roosters. Coop 10' from nearest property line and 50' from any residence other than owner.

Since you can only have 3 chickens, I'm assuming that you would like to keep them for eggs and meat? You will need a dual purpose breed of bird--large fowl. I didn't say this, but if I were going to cull a bird for meat and could only have 3 birds, I would go ahead and get more chicks to stash in a brooder in my garage (if enclosed) several weeks before culling the ones you have outside. If you want the chickens for eggs only, you can get three bantam sized hens and you should be happy with their production if you get good layers. If you make a decision on which direction you want to go for the chickens, someone here can make suggestions about the best birds for you and how to find a good, healthy bird.

All you need is a small coop built with a decent sized run to move around in. I use a "poop hammock" under the roosts to keep the poop from building up. This way I can scoop it like kitty litter, then rake up the poop on the ground and dump it in with leaves and kitchen scraps for a compost/mulch pile. Chicken poop works wonders for gardens.

Ducks--lovely critters--noisy. I have plenty of neighbors with ducks. Nearest neighbor is half mile away and we hear the ducks while inside our house. :0) I just purchased my own blue swedish. I have heard mixed reviews on noise from them, but they are SUPPOSED to be a quieter duck. Hopefully a duck expert can chime in and help you with those ideas.
