"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just had my first hawk attack! Luckily for my daughters 7 Wk old SLW my husband was on back porch at the time. He banged on back door and took off running with me right behind at that point. Both of us trying not to slip in fall in the wet muddy mess that is current our backyard. When we got to the fence the hawk took off. I think the poor baby was stunned. She did get up and go back inside the coop. I'll be keeping an eye on her. Enough excitement for the day.

I don't know why hawks are so protected, there are an awful lot of them, so they can't still be endangered ! My 2 dogs are trained to chase off anything that comes out of the sky, but they have surpassed their training. I have very bold vicious hawks around and when I had the bird flocks in coops instead of the barn, they would even land on the coops and try to open the latches to get in. Now I free range and have 2 large part labs to help guard the birds. Last week, a hark flew right up to the front door, where a hen and a rooster, ran for cover. Took the roo, killed him and came back for the hen, when my dogs saw it. The stupid hawk was so bold to start eating the hen, right there ! Hawk is no more, dogs killed it. They both got a chicken dinner that night. I took the dead hawk and put it on a pole next to the barn. Haven't seen a hawk since ! I love those dogs!

Whew! Close call with that hawk! They are sneaky!

I thought I'd share a few pictures with everyone.

This is my daughter inside the new duck house screwing in the lid hinges. She'll volunteer for anything. Maybe I should work harder at getting her to tell people "no". See, she thinks she's all good here...but then...

My DH put the lid down on her after this pic and then sat on it. She tried to crawl out the door but got stuck. Exactly what I mean about learning to tell folks no.

And my new wonderful lavender orp cockerel! He was a little pale this morning from the stress of the travel. I had vitamin water for him as soon as I got him home. Then when the rain started today he refused to go inside. The wind blew enough rain in that he got fairly wet and started sneezing. We brought him in and gave him some antibiotics to be on the safe side. Then we gave him a blow dry. Calmest rooster I've ever seen! Just stood there while we had that hair dryer going. I think he quite enjoyed his spa treatment. Spoiled already...

He's stationed about 35 to 40 yards from the pullets I will be cooping him with. He talked to them all day today. Ahhh...young love.

I see little lavender chicks in my future...

I also caught my golden laced wyandotte cockerel doing his "business" this afternoon! Whoot Whoot! I was beginning to wonder if he would ever figure out what his job was. Now, if I could just get that darn pullet to lay...I have 4 people wanting eggs from that pair... And I suppose I'm somewhat of a creep...I saw it out the window and went running out screaming, "Everybody look! Charlie Brown is on Patty! He's not dumb after all!" I did a happy dance for a good ten minutes and stared at them waiting to see if it would happen again...

I also have several white cochin chicks and two white silkie chicks I would love to trade someone for some blue slate or bourbon turkey eggs or porcelain d'uccles. Anyone?

That's cute! Our ducks have started laying a little too. I have been getting from 6 to 12 eggs a day, but don't have the 2 breeds separated yet, but it is easy to tell is any of the ducks that hatch are Rouen or Pekin or mixed. The Mixed get sold or processed before they can start mating, but both will lay off white eggs, so until I can get them separated, I have to hatch to tell. I counted the Pekin yesterday and there are 22, I counted 15 ducks and 7 drakes, so that fine, but I have not gotten the Rouen to stay in the same place long enough to count them. I know there are at least twice as many and a lot more drakes than ducks, so I need to process a lot of them for freezer camp. LOL We had about 150 last fall, but I sold a lot during the winter. We usually sell a few ducklings every spring, when the weather gets stable. Ducks are very personable and a kick to watch them play. They make nice outdoor pets for kids, as they are quite gently, but they are very messy, too ! LOL
They are messy! I love watching them chase the bugs around. The Pekins are one of my favorite ducks because they grow very fast and you can process them quickly before you get too overloaded with them.

On, no! I'm so glad you could save her. I hope she will be okay. I haven't experienced that yet and hope I never do.

OMGosh, Celie! That's so scary! So sorry about your roo and hen. I just didn't know the hawks could be so aggressive. Farr Park is near me and there is an eagle pair there with babies, so I am on the lookout for my girls and bunnies don't become eaglet food. Good dogs!!!

Sheep are kinda, sorta, well maybe easy? I have hair sheep, so there is no shearing. You just have to keep their hooves trimmed and de-worm them. Other than that, they LOVE grass. Best lawnmowers EVER! I love them when they are babies but after a year old, my older geese turn them into devils. Let me know if you need some eggs to hatch. ;) You ask what kind do I have. I have BAD BAD BAD geese. That's what kind I have.
Congrats on your first egg! Two more of my Pomeranian girls had eggs waiting for me in their stalls this morning: 4 out of 7 are now laying. How many of yours are females? As to you having BAD geese....they must be BAD to have ended up behind bars....lol. The picture above looks like they are in the slammer. Oh, speaking of BAD geese...mine are at the back screen door yelling their heads off right now: Must be bedtime. If I do not PROMPTLY appear when they are ready, they come fetch me...booger heads!
Thanks. And Twiley's description of their behaviors is perfect. It's funny that you mentioned "behind bars". I will continue Twiley's story where she stopped at adolescents and add another story during their "adult" life. True story.................................. Well, one day a few years ago, I arrived home from work to find a yellow "notice" taped to my back door. I began to read the note and I noticed that the note was from Animal Control. Well, as I read farther down, I read something to the affect saying that my geese were confiscated by animal control and they were in the "SLAMMER"!!! I was FURIOUS when I read this. I immediately called animal control to see what was going on. Well, I was informed that the geese had BITTEN "someone" and "someone" called to report them. I asked who did the geese bit, and who called and what hospital was the person in because if MY geese bite someone, they would need reconstructive surgery because I know how much damage they can do. So, the person that answered the phone said that she could not release that information. I asked them where was the evidence (pictures) of the goose bites. They didn't have anything. I asked where was the other evidence. Well there was nothing. So, I started thinking how could my geese bite someone and they are IN A BIG OLE' CHICKEN YARD behind a fence!!!! And who would have called???? Well, I did a process of elimination and I figured out the little witch that called. Her BAD demon son was probably sticking his finger through the fence and the geese TORE HIS BUTT UP and he went crying to the little witch mama of his. So, she called animal control and told them that the little demon child was bit and they came to get them. But how are you going to take MY geese off of MY property because some DUMB DUMB put his finger through MY FENCE. Oh no, that dog don't hunt with me. So, I asked for the supervisor but she wasn't there. They said that she would be tomorrow. So my geese had to stay in jail over night until I could bail them out. So, the next day, I called and talked to the supervisor. I asked the same questions as I did the day before but no one had any answers. They said that they never picked up any geese, so they didn't know what to do. I said what you do is LET THEM GO because YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE and you ILLEGALLY came on my property and took my geese because a demon child got bit putting his finger THROUGH MY FENCE. I told her that someone would be there within the hour to get my geese. So, I called my brother to go and get them. So, when he got there, there was yet ANOTHER Animal Control employee there who knew absolutely NOTHING about the incident, so he she didn't want to release the geese to my brother. My brother politely told her that she really didn't want to have to deal with me and if I had to leave work to drive to the Animal Control place, then it would not be a pretty sight when I got there. He told her that I don't play when it comes to my animals and someone's head would be on a plate if they didn't release the geese with no evidence of any wrong doing. He told her that if he left there with no geese then the Tasmanian Devil (ME) would be there within the hour and all CHAOS would break loose. Well, she finally got the picture and told my brother to take the geese. He said he went to the back and they were quiet as can be. He said a few of the girls had laid eggs in there. I guess jail time scared the eggs out of them. :gig He put them in a cage and brought them home. So, yes, my geese have been to JAIL!!!!!!! So now my geese have a criminal record. I'm still trying to get it expunged. :lau I never mentioned anything to the little heffer that called but I was later told that it was her and her son pretty much asked for a biting because he was picking with the geese. I"m glad my geese bit the heck out of his little demon butt. Serves him right. After I had some eye to eye non verbal contact with the mama, I never had another problem with her ever again. ;) Don't play with me or my animals. RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! :lau

Three questions:  What did you mean by "now begins the drama?"  How do the older geese turn the sheep into devils?  What is a BAD BAD BAD goose?

I was actually googling about small size sheep.  There is one that is pretty small, but it has the wool, so that's another story.  What is  "hair" sheep?

Sorry for so many questions, but I am just so curious.  :idunno

:lau   Primrose, you evidently haven't been around geese very much.  ;)    I LOVE my geese, but, like Julie says, the geese can sometimes be BAD BAD BAD -- well, that language is a bit strong but to help you put it into perspective -- relate it to babies (human). They are so precious when they are little, and then you get into the terrible twos and we THINK it's tough but we get through it, then they're very enjoyable through the elementary years because they are so innocent and come up with the funniest little sayings. They're always making us laugh much due to their innocence. Time goes by and you're having fun and don't notice anything different until one day the DRAMA begins. It's the beginning of Adolescence. You look at this child and think, "who is this person?" Believe me, you definitely KNOW when adolescence begins. Teenages are so full of ATTITUDE! Like teenagers, geese are also FULL of ATTITUDE and they are quite content to let you know what they think. And, if you don't believe them, they will put a hurt on you to prove it.  You can ask my husband. One of my geese pinched him and put a bruise on his leg the size of a softball. Believe me, my husband paid attention to that gander after that. :lau   While teenagers get through adolescence and hopefully become reasonable adults, geese on the other hand, live out their adult lives with adolescent attitude. I hope this explanation helps ;)  :D

PERFECT explanation. :thumbsup

Morning all! I was kind of sad last night after candling eggs. I currently have Silver Penciled Rocks, Silkies, Showgirls, Blue Wheatens, BBS Marans, Blue Barred Rocks, Olive Eggers, Buff Faverolles, Arkansas Blues, Sicilian Buttercup, and BLR wyandottes in the incubators. There are way too many of these eggs that are doing NOTHING! None of the blue rocks are doing anything and less than half of the blr wyandottes, arkansas blues, and wheatens are growing. Others are all okay. I've never had to pull out this many eggs for not developing! Bummed...

My new lavender orpington roo was supposed to arrive this morning. I was at the PO early. Lady says to me, "I'm sure he's dead. This whole room stinks now and it hasn't made any movement." My heart sank. I asked for scissors and, like a brave girl, I opened the box. That roo stood up and gave me the chicken eyeball! He was so happy to be freed! I brought him home, put him in a quarantine pen DH and I put together last night in 3 hours out of an old clothes dryer--kid you not, I am a Southerner and will always find a way to make something out of nothing! That rooster talked for over 15 minutes once I put him in his pen. Happy boy. Smells terribly after wallowing in poop in that box, but he's a happy boy!

Today is "Date Day" for DH and I. I think we're going out for italian food. I have no idea what else he has planned. Have a good day all!
Sorry about the eggs. YEAAAAAAAAAA ROOSTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :celebrate
