"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I can't for the life of me remember who posted it, but I read where someone was wanting to get rid of some marans and EE's...I've been looking for those two. Any help on who it might have been?!

Grackles are an invasive species by way of Texas and Mexico from what I understand -- they are a big loud bird like crows or catbirds or ricebirds -- they have kind of spade shaped tails - they are a real nuisance.

I still can't get my pic of Peetey to post but this is a pic of a wild parakeet & this is exactly what he looks like:

Pretty! How lucky that he found a loving home! I didn't realize there were wild parakeets around here. I would have assumed someones pet got out.

well I just got back from Wally-world & I don't see any grackles hanging around so maybe Jim did "re-home" them.

You know how he is - he built a "rocket launcher" out of a piece of PVC pipe that he attaches the bottle rockets too. Works very well on stray dogs too!

Yes,. we've had Peetey going on 4-5 years now. As usual,. we did NOT just wake up one morning & say 'OH! our lives are not complete! We MUST go get a parakeet"! Oh no. It was a cold, windy, rainy day about this time of year, & Jim was standing under the carport watching the rain when this little green parakeet blew inside & slammed up against the wall. It perched on a shelf where we keep mud boots. Jim called me & I came outside & took some scratch grains & the poor little bird came right up on my hand & started eating - it was starving -- thin, weak, soaking wet. I picked it up & brought it inside & toweled it off & then we said, "now what"? so we went to PetSmart & bought a cage & proper food & avian vitamins and there you go - Peetey has been w/us ever since.

We think he is a wild parakeet - ironically enough, a couple weeks before he came here, there was a special on PBS about the migration of the wild parakeets and La. is right in the middle of their migratory route. They are all green just like the green ones you see in the pet stores. The week after the TV show, I was outside & heard all this chittering & son-of-a-gun if there wasn't a whole flock of them right there! about 12-15 green parakeets. We spotted them around for a couple of days & then they were gone. We figure Peetey was part of that flock & too weak to keep up. We have seen them about this time of year several times since. I'm just afraid to turn Peetey loose because he is used to being fed now. He has never tamed down to the point of sitting on my finger or anything like that but he doesn't mind me cleaning his cage, & he plays with his toys & sings & feeds his imaginary friend in the mirror, so as far as I can tell, he's happy. We even thought about getting him a mate but that seems to be hit or miss as far as whether he would hit it off with another bird, so we decided to leave things alone.

I tried to post a pic of him but it isn't letting me right now for some reason. will try again later on.
I love your Peetey story! He probably would not do well in the wild, so to speak, but he has a good home right where he is!

I have seen them too, we usually get 8 to 12 of them drop in for a few days to fuel up and in a few days will be gone again. I heard they were blown in with one of the hurricanes, don't remember which one. Katrina or George, probably?

That's what I thought at first, then everywhere I looked they were perched in the fruit trees and on electric wires.

I figured that many could not have gotten loose from anyone but a pet store, but they kept returning every year!

About those pickled eggs........ I bought some pickled beets and I will use the pickled juice to do the pickled eggs to see if I like the taste. I will boil some guinea eggs tonight and let them soak in there for a few days. I'm on my last couple days of juicing, so this will be a treat whenever I can eat solid food. I'm soooooo ready! :drool

I would not do it! The resident Hawk here does fly overs even when I'm outside with 3 dogs, If I have to leave when they or out I call them back into the run/ coop. And I always keep an eye on the sky for the hawk.

Oh, he is so beautiful. I had parakeets growing up. I guess I've always been a bird girl. LOL My favorite was a pale blue named Pretty Boy.
