"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

That is a good looking parakeet.

Now you've got me craving pickled beets...drats...it's after 9!

I have one baby hatched tonight. A little Sicilian Buttercup--those eggs are like quail sized. I was amazed a chick made it out alive.

He had just pipped when I got home at 5, and had zipped and popped his head out by 6. He's been crashed halfway out of his shell ever since. Poor tired little chick!

Please ignore the pine shavings on the marans egg--they were practically cemented on two eggs. We've decided when those hatch we will be calling them Chip and Woody!

Now we're sleepy...snug spot between two big eggs.

Hi, Terri! What are grackles?

BTW, I loved the Petey story. Like Julie, I just didn't know they ever fly around here, I thought they were only wild in South America. See how much I learn off of thhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_a_Song_of_Sixpenceis thread! It's amazing.

Blackbirds. Blackbird pie anyone? 24 of them? Sing a song of six pence, mummm! sounds good to me, LOLhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_a_Song_of_Sixpence

We will be able to get our metal t-posts in the ground today -- might have to wait a month for them to dry up enough to stretch wire but at least it's a little more progress!
I have to go start some more tomato plants in the greenhouse. I'm staggering the planting this year to try & extend the season. Adding a couple of new varieties - Talladega, Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red, Black Plum. I'm so ready to start planting things in the ground!

Sounds like a busy day. Hopefully, I will be having fruit trees planted in the next few days. I will be getting lemons, satsumas and grapefruit.

For those of you that know I'm a big recycler, I wanted to share this little recycling project with you. WalMart has all of their left over Valentine stuff on sale. So, I saw a basket that had boxes of chocolate candy on sale for $0.10, so I bought about 30 of the boxes for my co-workers and friends that are chocolate lovers. Well, as I was looking at the RED candy box, a light went off. The base of a lot of the store bought feeders are red, so I thought it couldn't hurt to make this out of a feeder. Being as though I have 3 baby poults born this past weekend and they really don't need a large feeder, I thought the size of this one would be perfect. So, I asked my co-workers to give me the empty containers when they were done with it. I made a few cuts here and there to the candy box and put some crumble in and there you have it.

A recycled feeder! Not sure how well this would work for a large number of chicks but it seems to be working fine for my 3 stooges. And they can't tip it over.

For recycle Anything that can be reused here is over & over again. My chicken coop is an old dog house the run is made out of an old childs gym set the only thing I bought was the wire, tin on the roof was off a friends old tool shed, my nesting boxes or 18 gal drums cut in half & my brooder is an old dog travel kennel

on both the citrus trees AND the recycled feeders! I have to spray mine with the chelated iron this weekend. I'd love to get a blood orange but really have no place to put it where it would be protected against the north wind. I think I'm going to get 4 blueberry shrubs & plant them in between my roses.

My original chicken coop that we just overhauled was originally a firecracker stand! we ran one for about 2 years & did quite well, until the highway took our right-of-way out when they expanded the roads for I-49. So then we hauled the firecracker stand back home & turned it into a chicken coop. Then it sat vacant for years - it's over 20 years old now - but most of it is still in pretty fair condition so we just overhauled it again. Now I can tear down my grow-out pen and move my two brooder coops into that pen.

Always room for one more project!
