"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey there, anyone here from the Northshore area? I grew up with laying hens and pet chickens, but we are just starting to get to know the people in our area with critters :) We moved here about 2years ago (my husband is from here) and we are just starting to get more chickens, ect (husband has a quail and pheasant obsession lol) and I have 3 incubators I'm trying to get started hatching my own chicken eggs! (starting with only one incubator lol) By the way, anybody have luck taming down a rhode island red rooster that has hit puberty with a vengance and become meeeeean- or is it a lost cause and should i break out the riot gear to collect eggs?? He started out a pet and was totaly sweet untill two weeks ago when he decided he was macho man and wanted to take over the universe! :)
Welcome landry! I'm a newbie too. I'm on the southshore in River Ridge. Good to have you in the group!

Holy cow kuntrygirl! I just had the time to go to your page and check it out. The work you and your husband have done is very impressive. I saw all kinds of ideas I can use. Did you have to do anything special to get your girls to lay in one area and roost in the other or did it come naturally to them? I really like the separate nesting area you have for the broody hens too.
Awesome job!!!

Hey everyone! I woke up to go make my feed run, and found a brand new lamb waiting on me. The first of the year, and he's quite a handsome man! I also got my first sebbie egg of the season! All in one day. Between that and the Mayhaw jelly I picked up at the swap, it doesn't get much better! I'll post some pics of the youngster once I get to my desktop! Have a great weekend peeps!

I am a newbie and many people here know LOTS more than I do, but I wanted to mention that my chickens roost in their coop and lay in a separate nesting house. I did it because my coop really wasn't big enough for the nesting boxes and roosting. All I did was put their nesting box in the coop for a couple of days and then move it to the little nesting house and they followed the nesting boxes. For me, it was like the way they go in the coop at night on their own, they only wanted to lay where their boxes were.

Are some chickens just not nice?

My largest, lightest pullet (barred rock) has been charging my dog and today she charged me. I was walking in the backyard in flipflops and I felt a peck on my heel. She continued to charge me until I left the backyard. Later in the afternoon, we had no issues. I don't have any recent pictures of her, but I have posted one a while back somewhere on BYC to see if she was a roo since she was so much lighter.

They are about 13 weeks old. Shouldn't it be obvious by now if she is actually a he?

It should be noted that she is the leader of my little flock of 4. She is also the largest and boldest. I'm thinking that if this continues, I may get to finally taste a backyard chicken!

I admit that I thought it was kind of funny when she would puff up and hop at the dog, but it's not so funny when it's my foot. And she keeps giving me that eye as if to say, "You want a piece of me?" A thigh would be nice.

Were you wearing different shoes the second time? I read on another thread somewhere that someone's rooster had an issue with a certain pair of shoes. You might want to try a little experiment with the flip flops and see. :)

No I went back out in flip flops to see if that was the problem but she was fine later in the day. I had originally thought it was the clap of the flip flop that ignited her.

sawyer--Sometimes birds can just be ornery like we can. Keep an eye on her. Meanness shouldn't be tolerated.

Sterling--I am getting some midget white turkey eggs in a few weeks. It'll be our first go with turkeys, too. I decided on this breed because they're a little smaller, reviews on meat taste are great, and they can reproduce on their own. I've heard too many horror stories about people having to do artificial insemination with their turkeys and then the males actually starting to enjoy the human extracting the sperm. Ugh...I don't think I want any turkey tom chasing any member of my family with those thoughts in his head! Churns my stomach to think about it.

I'm ordering the midget whites from a lady on BYC --she goes by flocks-a-lot. Sells a lot of the midget whites. Take a look. It may be a good start for you, too.

Long day here working on coops. Still sick, too. It's been 4 weeks. And the prescriptions only worked for about 4 days. I'm fed up with the drainage and coughing. Maybe if the darned weather would stabilize I could get over it.
