"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Does anyone know where I could find 2 juvenile silkies? I don't care what sex. I am fulfilling a dream of mine, finally, to have a humble little backyard flock. I already have 6 3week old buff orps, and I would dearly love to add a couple of silkies to the mix. I'd even be willing to trade two buffs for two silkies. I'm on west side of St. Tammany.
Also, I keep seeing craigslist ads for Bayou State Hatchery in Pontchatoula. Can't find any info about them anywhere. Does anyone know anything about them?

Good Luck. :fl

Okay.  My normal chicken procedure is on a turner and then I hatch in cartons upright.  Just let me know what to do.  My concern with hand turning is that I'm gone to work from 6 am until 5 pm...they won't be turned at all for 11 hours until I get in.  I could turn at 5:30, again at 5 when I get in, then again at bedtime, but that's the best I can do during the week.

Pea eggs you lay on their sides in your bator. let the auto-turner do its' job and -- and, in addtion to that, this is what my mentor, the late, great Burtis Craft (Deerman) taught me -- you turn them "lengthwise" 3 x daily -- it doesn't matter about your work hours-- just get those 3 turns lengthwise in daily -- it is the key to boosting your hatch rate. Your times you listed will do just fine. Keep temps & humidity just as you do chicken eggs. I was "winging" it all last year, but I hatched 14 out of 18 pea eggs so I know what I did works, or at least it did for me. And - I had staggered hatches -- I used my Brinsea Octagon for incubating & when I hit lockdown, moved those eggs into my ancient styrofoam Hovnabator 1602N, which worked fine for lockdown/hatch.

I never hatched them upright in cartons -- they are too big for that -- always kept them laying on their sides.

I heard the breeding calls today, so it won't be long now until we see pea eggs! :)

Looking good! I have to get some updated pics of mine. Burtis was so cute--- Romeo & D'artagnan were fanning away & he got right in the middle of them & opened his little turkey-sized tail & was strutting his stuff along with the big boys!

Thanks Terri. The pen is almost too small for them when the boys fan. We are trying to think of a way to expand it a few feet more.

I'm not too hip on fruit trees other than knowing the ones I like to eat from,LOL

Probly Terri & Jim could enlighten you some on this they seem to be in the know of these things, I'd say figs for sure, bananas maybe, and too any of the citrus esp with your more southern locale.

Got my Columbian Rock biddies in the mail this mornin' it has started out as a good day, for sure.

Jeff
