My wife and started our first hatch 20 days ago. As of this morning we have 16 out of 20 hatched. I am excited to have such a good number on our first attempt. It may not gone as well if we had not found this forum and all the good info put out here. Thanks all. :-)

That all depends on exactly where you are in the state. The Florida King is a low chill variety that would be good south of Lake Ponchartrain. I have had good luck here in Northern St. Tammany parish with La Feliciana, which is an LSU creation. I also grow Sam Houston, and Harvester.

They do very good and some people, including my daughter, loves them. I think they need a pollinator, but I am not sure about that!

What are mealworms and will they be good to grow under rabbit cages? I was going to get earthworms.

I bought mine at Lowes, I have to get back to you with the names, but I picked a early, mid season and a late one and got some peaches the first year it was in the ground.

Celie,

Mealworms need to live in grain by-products. What you need under the rabbit cages are composting worms (as long as the area is protected from chickens). Composting worms, known as red wigglers live on top of the soil, not in it and are used in vermicomposting. They will turn that rabbit poo into great fertilizer in no time flat. You could make a shallow catch tray under the pens with a wire bottom and as the worms compost the poo the remnants would fall through the bottom for you.
