"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Been unable to post after the computer failing AGAIN. But at least the pictures are saved.

In other news, I lost a rooster (hate to say it, but thank goodness it was a rooster) and we moved the flock to their permanent home in the new coop and run. They are still shell shocked I guess, because they run away from all movement. The dog barking doesn't help, but surely he will give up.

I love finally being able to watch them scratch and run around. A few will follow me around the pen and others will sometimes follow them. But once they realize I don't have food it's back to their "hangout" under the muscadines that grow along part of the fence.

Sorry to hear about your rooster. What happened? How did you lose him? The dog?

If anyone is interested in soil testing and how to tell what type of soil you have, let me know. Or if you plan on purchasing any property and want to know what type of soil that property has, I can show you that as well.

Actually no, the dog is over the fence at the new house. We are building over the summer and just put up the coop there. (the dog is inside my grandma's backyard, we are building on family land) The rooster, unfortunately, was pecked. We got in late and I fed and watered them in the dark, but everyone was moving. He was gone by the time I saw him the next day.

I am going to have to cull some roosters though. They make up half the flock.

Oh ok. Sounds like you will have meat for the freezer with all of your roosters. I am waiting to see how many roosters I have in the bunch of 50 new chicks that I bought this past weekend. All of them will be going into the freezer.

I will. I think I know who did it, and I was so mad. I guess that's just chickens, but I would of preferred the quick end.

These guys are going on 10 weeks, when should an orpington be big enough? I am watching the birds to see which rooster is the nicest. I want to leave one or two for protection.

And I have no idea what the bloodlines are for these birds. Probably a hatchery. My plan is to have these as a laying flock while I fence off sections of the pen for the good breeds (long way down the road!) Is just one rooster good or more or should I have one at all?

Ameracaunas they lay blue shelled eggs! how exciting. remember that there is no I in AMERAUCONA!
THANKS!! I want to spell my babies' breed correctly. They are growing SO fast, I can see their feathers coming in. They are fuzzy butts such a SHORT time.

Well, the man who was so insanely ugly to me about the chick order emailed me yesterday and apologized. Chicks are supposed to ship today with extras. WOW! I prayed about it. I am glad it is working out. It is supposed to be an assortment of "rare" colored orpingtons --but in his email he said there were probably also some blacks and buffs. I am keeping my fingers crossed for red, jubilee, mottled, or gold laced in pairs or trios!

I hope they make the trip safely!

Happy Wednesday!
Good for him, he owed you an apology!!

One rooster will be fine to help guide them. Some folks are happy just having laying hens. If there is any possibility you'll want to hatch babies from them later you'd better keep one.

I received the Click N Ship info this afternoon. I hope the chicks arrive in good shape!
