"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Had a really awkward convo with my 80-something year old neighbor. I cam back from Breakfast and she was just staring at my coop.

Her: What is that thing?
Moi: It's a coop
Her: What?
Moi: A chicken coop
Her: Hohhot.. nooo!!! Those things are a mess!
Moi: Well they aren't going to be free range and it will only be 2 or 3 so you don't have to worry about it them making a mess on your property.
Her: I used to have chickens when I was a little girl. You know those things fly, I don't want them in my yard.
Moi: Well they will be in their coop and run all the time so it's no need to worry.
Her: I don't want those things flying into my yard!
Moi: They will be in their coop.
Her: And they poop everywhere I don't want them pooping in my yard!
Moi: They will be in their coop.
Her:Just make sure they don't poop in my yard.
Moi: Okay ( just gave up and went to my house)

I wish people would understand there isn't just one way to raise chickens nowadays. I know this probably wont be the last I hear about my future chickens.

Yes foxes can be the hardest of all to trap but I have been trapping all my life and know a trick or 2. Still took me a week and a half to get those 2 Got 1 more I know of to get but things are settling down again so maybe I can get some ducks raised and ready for camp kenmore :)

Morning all hope yall a great day :)

First welcome to BYC and the wonderful world of being owned by poultry.
Next, wowzers...good luck with that neighbor of yours: Hopefully she likes eggs and will accept bribes after you get some birds!

As to getting some birds: Their is a swap on the Northshore at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds (under the covered livestock arena) on Sunday the 23rd from 9-1 and then one at J & B Feeds in St. Bernard on the 30th.
Their should be sellers with adult or older juveniles at both swaps. Both have Facebook pages where folks post what they want and what they are planning on bringing, but only half the people that come actually post.

Oh and btw everyone...the price of feed at my local feed store DROPPED by .20 to .50 a bag this week for the first time in months. It isn't much, but every cent counts. My feed bill has climbed into the "give your darling husband a stroke" range with all the chicks, ducklings, poults, and goslings this spring!

Just gotta love OLD people!!! (no offense to anyone out there!! Unless you are 80+ and could of had this convo - LOL) I bet she's going to blame your chickens for the "regular" birds pooping on stuff.... I hope not, though!!

It has dropped a hair, here, too... Actually more than a hair, over a $10 difference!! I have to buy Georgia's (my extremely spoiled paint mare) feed weekly because the old man that I rent pasture from says that she needs "fresh" feed. REALLY??! I used to buy a months supply at a time.... but his pasture is dirt cheap and he feeds her for me daily, so I figure I can try to appease him for a little while. Anyway.... weekly feed bill (feed & hay) went from $61 to $49!!! Feed AND hay went down here!! I almost fainted in the feed store, and asked them if they were sure that was right... So, you know what that means.... more money for ducks & geese!!

Anyone have goslings for sale?! LOL

We had a calf that we named Ribeye. Called him "Ribbie". That was the ONLY way that I was able to do it. I totally agree.... it is different when you know they are going to be supper, that way you don't bond with them.

Hmmm... My count was around 60 feathered little buddies/babies. WOW. I wish I had the space! Been trying to talk the hubby into getting a couple of turkeys. He is standing firm on NO (for now). However, I told him that there may be a few additions to the flock when he gets home. He didn't say anything, just gave me a "look" and shook his head. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission sometimes!!

Oh my goodness! This gave me a good laugh! Hope you don't have too much trouble with her. I'm always happy for anyone that gets to have the pleasure of keeping chickens. There is nothing like spending time relaxing and watching their antics. Hope you enjoy them.

Well, I don't have trouble with foxes right now. But who knows if I will in the future if we move. So what is your tips or tricks for catching foxes. What I do have trouble with here is raccoons. I have not been able to catch a HUGE Momma one. We actually got her in our biggest trap. She was so strong she bent the door out and got away. Grrr!

My chicken plans for today were de-railed by life and a plumbing issue

The day wasn't a complete bust for the to do list though. At least we did get a plan together on what repairs/modifications we are going to be doing to the "Old Hen House", the "Egg Hut" and the shower is getting nice shiny new hardware. We also picked up the wood, hinges and latches when we were getting the new shower hardware. When we were at the hardware store I spotted some pieces of plexi-glass in the bin where they cut it. We asked the manager if we could get the scrap pieces for free or cheap. I LOVE, LOVE FREE!!!! He gave us the 4 pieces for a penny each. One in particular I think will work perfectly on the top of the feeder box I want hubby to put on the "Egg Hut". I want to hinge it atop so we can see at a glance if the food needs cleaned or added to.

Over the last few days I have had to separate all the roosters from one another. I'm sure you all know better than me about dealing with roosters......I have never had one that I actually kept. And certainly not more than one. I didn't have any trouble with 2 of them that were separated before any trouble began. But the Houdan (Asterick) and the Cochin(Tiny) were still together into the new "Egg Hut". They had never gotten rough with one another. Only face offs. Until yesterday we found my sweet "Tiny" with the side of his face bloodied and his comb a little bit too.

I feel so bad that I didn't move "Asterick" sooner! Ugh! Well, he is moved now and we put the female Houdan (Tweety Dot) with him because he was very distraught being alone. They are happy together. (BTW what is it with the names these kids give some of these chickens HAHA!) My little "Tiny" looked much better today. He was also even calmer than usual. That had me wondering. I wonder if he is just feeling a bit tired because of having his ears boxed or if he is just more relaxed because he isn't being harassed. Maybe he WAS being harassed much more than I realized. He is such a little sweetie pie. Both my husband and I held him while talking about what modifications we were going to do to his house. HE came up to the top floor on his own to see us. Anyway, I hope he heals up ok! I don't think he would have even made it out of the brooder if it wasn't for my girls and I paying him extra special attention. He did fine except when it came to his naptimes in the daytime. All the other chicks would be laid out sleeping away. But he would just stand there and cheep in such a pathetic way. Louder and louder........for a LONG time! He just couldn't seem to settle down and rest. So we would put a folded towel inside our sweater or sweatshirt, then slip him inside when it was warmed up. He would instantly be quiet and be asleep within seconds. Once he had a good nap we could put him back and he would go about his normal chick biz. This went on for the first few days that we had him and I thought surely something must be wrong with him and he wouldn't make it. But after a few days he got a lot better! But now we are so attached to him I don't know how we could ever give him away and I feel like a bad Mommy for not protecting him. I did apologize to him though today during his snuggle time

Pretty sure he has forgiven me.
