"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

How long can eggs sit in the nesting box before they are unsafe to eat? I checked for more eggs this morning and there aren't any new ones. We were not going to eat the three in there now. Also, the three that are there...I don't see anyone sitting on them. Whenever I go out, as soon as they see or hear me, everyone comes running. So I haven't seen anyone on the nest. Should I leave them there or remove them? Help!

Oh, I also forgot to say that our local Dollar Tree had Progresso recipe starters on sale 2 @ $1.00 ($0.50 each). I bought 6 of them but I think I may go back and get more. I cooked some wheat pasta last night and I poured the tomato recipe starter on it and it was delicious!!!!!!! :drool

This is the one that I bought but they have others (see pic below).

Weeks if not been set on or in a lot of sun(hens clutch up eggs for weeks on end before some have enough to brood) do you know how to float eggs for testing if the whole egg floats, gently! ever so gently, dispose of it properly. LOL If the large end rises up this is due to evaporation but you can still crack it into a bowl and check it out. Hey, before refrigerators or even ice boxes they kept the eggs out on the cabinet in egg baskets. Now if they are really poopy or had broken egg contents(yolk) on the outsides I'd rinse them off and let the dogs or cats eat them or boil them and feed them back to the hens this makes for more eggs.LOL

Jeff

ETA now if your going to be putting them(the unknown date eggs) in the fridge and keep them for a few more months I wouldn't say that would be to good as bacterias can get started before they are refrigerated soon enough and they still go bad sooner rather than eggs freshly stored in the fridge then those can be kept for a long time and usually be good for months on end. J/S and FYI I like using text abbreviations, sounds important huh? LOL

I'm about to vent here, so please excuse me.

I was reading someone's post on Facebook and she was bragging about the fact that she is a "country girl" just because she prefers finding "meat deals" as opposed to finding a deal on a pair of shoes (I guess), which I don't have a problem with that. A steak does taste better than a pair of high heeled shoes.

When females who have lived in a rural area (the country) and may have been raised in the country by their parents or grandparents and were taught to fry a chicken or make home made biscuits and may be able to win a State Fair Baking Contest but has never picked an egg before in their life and is afraid of chicken poop, or who has never picked a vegetable from a garden or picked a fruit from a tree, they really should not brag about being a country girl. That only means that YOU LIVED IN THE COUNTRY darling. YOU ARE NOT A TRUE COUNTRY GIRL darling. They probably should clarify it and say that they are a girl/woman who has LIVED in the country and was taught how to make a country meal from scratch. I am finding that they think that this is a badge of honor when they profess their self-appointed titles - COUNTRY GIRL. I'm sure this puts their social status in a different category from other females who have never even driven down a dusty country road.

BUT, when you have females like all of us on this thread who know and understand what having chickens and other animals, picking eggs, building a chicken house, etc etc etc is all about and even though some live in the city limits, in my opinion that is someone who is considered a "country girl".

I would love to have a conversation with a country girl who found a good meat deal at the butcher and invite her over to help me in the chicken yard with my country animals. I wonder how long she would last out there with me once she really sees what country living is all about.

OK, that is enough of my venting.

Carry on. :p

Very well said! I am no where near being a "country girl" yet. I have many years to go. I do know I feel like such a DORK about how excited I got when I FINALLY got my first egg!! I know that I do want to raise meat birds. I had my first "farm fresh" chicken a couple of weeks ago and it was FABULOUS! There was no comparison. So, I will continue to lurk here, and annoy the heck out of everyone with my questions...and I hope to LEARN a lot!

Your "funny" for the evening...

My eight year old Matthew has been the only one campaigning to keep Horn Dog Harry (our rooster). Wellll, tonight Horn Dog went after Matthew when he was outside. All the hens run to Matthew, because he usually has some kind of treat for "his" girls. He knows not to hand feed Harry. Well, after Harry went after him, Matthew said HORN DOG HARRY GOES!!!

We also got another egg tonight. It seems that she lays late in the day.

Morning peeps. I hope that everyone had a great weekend. I was out and about this weekend. I did everything that was not on my "To Do" list and did NOTHING of what was on my "To Do" List. What a great weekend!
big_smile.png

My morning started with my usual WalMart errands. I traveled to the Jockey Lot in Carencro. I had my eye on a porcelain mortar & pestle that was $6.00 the last time I saw it. So, I went back to see if the booth still had it. Unfortunately that particular mortar and pestle was gone but they did have another one but it was more than I wanted to pay. It was $13.00. So, I passed on that deal. However, I did find in another booth a wooden mortar and pestle but it was kinda cheap and I wasn't sure how the "pill crushing" quality would be. So, I didn't buy that one either.

Now this is what caught me off guard. When I saw this, I had to take a pic. Psychic reading at the flea market? Who knew!
idunno.gif

When I took the first pic, the "psychic" looked at me with this funky look. So, I was waiting for her to tell me something about taking a pic of her sign because my response would have been, "Well, if you're a psychic, you should have known that I was going to do that and then you could have acted accordingly". But she didn't say anything.

Well, I didn't leave empty handed. I spotted 2 quart size canning jars. I asked the guy how much he wanted for them and he said $0.25 per jar. So, I bought both of them and only paid $0.50. All I have to do is buy some lids for them and I'm in business for some canning.

I also picked up this little treasure. I collect these when I see them at a good price and this was a good price. I only paid $1.00 dollar for it. It is in PERFECT condition. This will be added on with the others that I have. I was so happy when I found this.

So after that, I went to Dollar General. I always go the clearance rack when I go to these stores to see what's on clearance. Well, I saw a jar of apricot preserves with the usual orange price tag on it but there was a black line through it and all I could see was the dollar sign and the number 1. So, that peeked my interest because now I was curious to see how much it actually costs because that black mark indicated to me that the price was going to be less and $1.00. So, I took 1 jar to the cash register and I asked the cashier if he could scan it for me. So, he scans it on one of his electronic devices. I then see his facial reaction and it was weird. So, he scanned it again. I got another weird look. So, then he scans it on the cash register. And this is what I heard next, "Ma'am, this is scanning for $0.01". I was like, "HUH"? So, he repeated the price of $0.01 again. So, I politely went back to the shelf and got the rest of them (the other 7 making a total of 8) and bought them. So, I purchased 8 jars of apricot preserves (not expired either) for $0.08.

So, then I get to thinking. Well if they are on sale for $0.01 at this store, I wonder if the other stores have them for that same price. Well, to make a long story short, the other stores did have them for that same price. So, I ended my Dollar General shopping spree by purchasing 18 jars of apricot preserves for a whopping $0.18. I was so proud of my little self. Now, I have to find out who eats apricot preserves, so that I can give them away.

I had already given 1 to my neighbor when I took this pic.

Then I traveled to CVS and printed out my weekly coupons at the coupon machine. I scored some expensive deodorant ($6.00 a bottle) for only $1.00 each. The deodorant was on sale for $1.99 and the coupon was for $1.00 off any deodorant. I could only get 2 of them but will go back today and scan my card again to get 2 more.

Mama guinea and her babies roosting at night. As young as they are, they can still fly onto a 4 foot fence.

Oh almost forgot. All of the designer chicks have hatched. They are cute as buttons. I forgot to take a pic of them. Now, I'm waiting on the pea eggs. I'm not sure if they will hatch at all. I was having BIG TIME problems with the humidity this weekend. The eggs were on lockdown and the humidity would not get any higher than 50 and then would drop to 20. I tried EVERYTHING that I have EVER read about fixing humidity problems and NOTHING worked.!!! Both trays (Brinsea Incubator) were filled with water and I also had sponges in both trays. I had 2 saturated sponges on the floor of the incubator above the wells as well. In addition to that, I had a towel that I kept saturated with water. I had put in a small cup of hot water by the eggs. I adjusted the vent in different ways to see if that would help but nothing helped. I was still getting a final reading of 20. So, I took to posting on the pea thread and one of the BYC'ers pointed out that it may have been a problem with the reader. When I read that, I went to Walmart (I was already out shopping) and purchased an Acurite digital humidity monitor at Walmart for $10.00 and put that in the incubator. And wouldn't you know, the old hydrometer was malfunctioning. The new humidity monitory quickly gave me a humidity reading of 73. So, I think I"m back in business. I know how delicate pea eggs are when it comes to the humidity, so I'm not sure if this batch will hatch or not. I just want it to me OVER WITH !!!!!!!!!

Have a good day y'all.

Sometimes ppl decide to take up a certain "label" if it becomes more popular. I think it is WAY more glorious to just be you. Whatever YOU are. Faking is just not cute at all in my book.

I am so glad you got to enjoy a FARM FRESH chicken! I agree they are wonderful!! I was thinking yesterday how sad we are going to be when we finish off our last one that we grew ourselves. I guess I will have to seek out somewhere around here to get some.

Funny! Poor boy! I guess he is learning how mean those roos can be.

After this weekend I ended up with 17 sealed pints of my homemade Chili that I put through the pressure canner. They are going to be so welcome in the winter!!! I need MORE jars. LOL! I have been checking a few places weekly hoping they will mark them down for clearance since it is getting late in the year. TSC, Lowes and Wal-Mart are a few. So far no markdowns. K-mart and Freds have jars too. I will keep making my rounds. I have even been watching Craigslist for jars. Haha!

I am still enjoying this heat at present. Last I replanted some veggies, which have already some have sprouted. And yesterday I weeded most of the peanuts. Its my first time growing them. And there are PEANUTS GROWING!!!! I love growing new things. I accidently pulled up a couple of peanuts while pulling up a weed. I still have another 3 weeks at least to wait before I should get them dug up. I love peanuts roasted and salted. Yum!!! Because of the heat the sprinkler had to be run today for sure. I want to plant more veggies and some of the beds were just TOO DRY to even work with. Maybe tomorrow. Cabbage and Peas are next on my list.
