"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Morning peeps. I hope that everyone had a great weekend. I was out and about this weekend. I did everything that was not on my "To Do" list and did NOTHING of what was on my "To Do" List. What a great weekend! :D

My morning started with my usual WalMart errands. I traveled to the Jockey Lot in Carencro. I had my eye on a porcelain mortar & pestle that was $6.00 the last time I saw it. So, I went back to see if the booth still had it. Unfortunately that particular mortar and pestle was gone but they did have another one but it was more than I wanted to pay. It was $13.00. So, I passed on that deal. However, I did find in another booth a wooden mortar and pestle but it was kinda cheap and I wasn't sure how the "pill crushing" quality would be. So, I didn't buy that one either.

Now this is what caught me off guard. When I saw this, I had to take a pic. Psychic reading at the flea market? Who knew! :idunno

When I took the first pic, the "psychic" looked at me with this funky look. So, I was waiting for her to tell me something about taking a pic of her sign because my response would have been, "Well, if you're a psychic, you should have known that I was going to do that and then you could have acted accordingly". But she didn't say anything. :gig

Well, I didn't leave empty handed. I spotted 2 quart size canning jars. I asked the guy how much he wanted for them and he said $0.25 per jar. So, I bought both of them and only paid $0.50. All I have to do is buy some lids for them and I'm in business for some canning.

I also picked up this little treasure. I collect these when I see them at a good price and this was a good price. I only paid $1.00 dollar for it. It is in PERFECT condition. This will be added on with the others that I have. I was so happy when I found this. :ya

So after that, I went to Dollar General. I always go the clearance rack when I go to these stores to see what's on clearance. Well, I saw a jar of apricot preserves with the usual orange price tag on it but there was a black line through it and all I could see was the dollar sign and the number 1. So, that peeked my interest because now I was curious to see how much it actually costs because that black mark indicated to me that the price was going to be less and $1.00. So, I took 1 jar to the cash register and I asked the cashier if he could scan it for me. So, he scans it on one of his electronic devices. I then see his facial reaction and it was weird. So, he scanned it again. I got another weird look. So, then he scans it on the cash register. And this is what I heard next, "Ma'am, this is scanning for $0.01". I was like, "HUH"? So, he repeated the price of $0.01 again. So, I politely went back to the shelf and got the rest of them (the other 7 making a total of 8) and bought them. So, I purchased 8 jars of apricot preserves (not expired either) for $0.08.

So, then I get to thinking. Well if they are on sale for $0.01 at this store, I wonder if the other stores have them for that same price. Well, to make a long story short, the other stores did have them for that same price. So, I ended my Dollar General shopping spree by purchasing 18 jars of apricot preserves for a whopping $0.18. I was so proud of my little self. Now, I have to find out who eats apricot preserves, so that I can give them away.

I had already given 1 to my neighbor when I took this pic.

Then I traveled to CVS and printed out my weekly coupons at the coupon machine. I scored some expensive deodorant ($6.00 a bottle) for only $1.00 each. The deodorant was on sale for $1.99 and the coupon was for $1.00 off any deodorant. I could only get 2 of them but will go back today and scan my card again to get 2 more.

Oh almost forgot. All of the designer chicks have hatched. They are cute as buttons. I forgot to take a pic of them. Now, I'm waiting on the pea eggs. I'm not sure if they will hatch at all. I was having BIG TIME problems with the humidity this weekend. The eggs were on lockdown and the humidity would not get any higher than 50 and then would drop to 20. I tried EVERYTHING that I have EVER read about fixing humidity problems and NOTHING worked.!!! Both trays (Brinsea Incubator) were filled with water and I also had sponges in both trays. I had 2 saturated sponges on the floor of the incubator above the wells as well. In addition to that, I had a towel that I kept saturated with water. I had put in a small cup of hot water by the eggs. I adjusted the vent in different ways to see if that would help but nothing helped. I was still getting a final reading of 20. So, I took to posting on the pea thread and one of the BYC'ers pointed out that it may have been a problem with the reader. When I read that, I went to Walmart (I was already out shopping) and purchased an Acurite digital humidity monitor at Walmart for $10.00 and put that in the incubator. And wouldn't you know, the old hydrometer was malfunctioning. The new humidity monitory quickly gave me a humidity reading of 73. So, I think I"m back in business. I know how delicate pea eggs are when it comes to the humidity, so I'm not sure if this batch will hatch or not. I just want it to me OVER WITH !!!!!!!!! :barnie

Here are some old tiles. I am gong to try to set them in concrete to make a little patio on the chicken yard. Never did this before, but it should work.

After this weekend I ended up with 17 sealed pints of my homemade Chili that I put through the pressure canner.  They are going to be so welcome in the winter!!!  I need MORE jars.  LOL!  I have been checking a few places weekly hoping they will mark them down for clearance since it is getting late in the year.   TSC, Lowes and Wal-Mart are a few.  So far no markdowns.  K-mart and Freds have jars too.  I will keep making my rounds.  I have even been watching Craigslist for jars.  Haha!

I am still enjoying this heat at present.  Last I replanted some veggies, which have already some have sprouted.  And yesterday I weeded most of the peanuts.  Its my first time growing them.  And there are PEANUTS GROWING!!!!  I love growing new things.  I accidently pulled up a couple of peanuts while pulling up a weed.  I still have another 3 weeks at least to wait before I should get them dug up.  I love peanuts roasted and salted.  Yum!!!  Because of the heat the sprinkler had to be run today for sure.  I want to plant more veggies and some of the beds were just TOO DRY to even work with.  Maybe tomorrow.  Cabbage and Peas are next on my list.

I thought I saw some canning jars at TJ Maxx. Do you have a Dirt Cheap anywhere close? I have found some truly unbelievable deals there before. I don't have one close by, but I'm like a kid in a candy store when I find myself near one!

Peanuts. Now that would be fun to try! Add it to my never ending list. :/

Oh man. The last time I saw a TJMaxx was when I lived in Nebraska. I didn't even know they had them here in the South. Never heard of a Dirt Cheap store. If I spot one I will surely stop in though! That sounds intriguing for sure! I have seen some of the ladies on the Canning Granny fb page have wonderful luck in the last month. They happened upon GREAT deals where they got LOADS of jars for fantastic prices!. Now mind you some of them had old food in them or decades old layer of dirt. Haha! But at the prices they paid the work to clean them would be worth it. One lady literally had a flat trailer packed full. I know I will happen upon some sooner or later. I will just keep on putting my feelers out there. I may even check out the flea market and some garage sales this coming weekend.

I tried tiles in cement! :/ after a few months here, they were loose. Set in an indentation still but wobbled a bit. Use mortar* I think its called or set them in with a bit of a lip so if it doesn't stick they still will stay put :) 2nd try was a HUGE pain to get cement up...now I moved them and used them as stepping stones thru the blackberry bushes. Easy peasy machete walk now lol

I don't know where you are, but there are Dirt Cheaps in Baker, Amite, and Franklinton that I know of. It's worth the dig.

If anyone wants to see Golden Girls Twerking, let me know. I sent something to some of you all who were in on our Twerking Convo a few posts back. I hope that I didn't miss anyone.

Dirt Cheaps sound like the things in there are dirt cheap. :lau

Their is a Dirt Cheap in Bogalusa, but that place is scary inside. The time I went to check it out, Stuff was just thrown everywhere and it was really dirty. I got paranoid of catching bedbugs from the merchandise and left...lol. I have heard good things about the chain though so am sure it's just this location.

Julie, you would LOVE it!!!! You can spend hours in one digging for the treasures. It's hit or miss, but so much fun. You can also "negotiate" if something is missing a piece or part...it's great! I don't have time to go very often, but boy is it fun!!

The Dirt Cheap I know of is in Franklinton. It's hit or miss, but when you hit, it's BIG!! I've gotten Lands End men's shirts for $2.50 and I got my Lands End fleece jacket for $5.00. I've also found some great "kitchen stuff" (pots, dishes, etc) for a couple of dollars. When I go into a Dirt Cheap, I'm looking for the "expensive brands" whether it's clothing, cookware, or small appliances. Good quality stuff, that I would never pay anywhere near full price for!!

Going to a Dirt Cheap can be an interesting experience...you just have to "prepare" yourself.
