Normally my renters are not here during the day and I never have complaints from them... Except today... All of my renters are in travel trailers and one of them comes to me to say he thinks something is digging into his trailer from underneath. I have them all lifted on concrete pillars so I think it is strange that something would want in that high. He says it starts just after 8 in the morning and sounds like thump, thump, thump, scratch, scratch. I went out with my trusty flashlight and looked under. This is when my head hen complains at me for looking... Turns out my birds have been roosting on the supports for shade and eating all the tasty bugs that have been left alone for years there. I do the nice landlord thing and remove my girls and put them in their area when I hear another complaint. This would be the day, right? Apparently, because it was a chicken I must allow it back into the main yard because the ant population has gone down drastically in that area. I told him that if I let them back in that area I could not keep them out from under his trailer. "So be it" he says, "better chickens than ants".
Hey everyone I'm new hear from Houma.
Ron is 2 people, Ron and his wife Pam. Pam will put her name at the end of the post when it is her (to understand different comments on the same post). Hide your matches, we have many uses for them and not good when we forget our meds. Most are well medicated, but when we forget expect many pages to catch up on in just a few hours. All questions are welcome even if you think they are stupid. We have all asked them before but we talk too much to expect you to read threw all the past posts. What does your flock look like? Have you figured out chicken math yet? If not, ask Kuntrygirl all about it (Mrs Fertile Acres).![]()

Well I was waiting for you to give our introduction before I started yapping and scaring them off. Lol
Crazy work day, finished off with 40 kindergarten through 2nd graders at cross country practice. Coach (a woman, so I expected more common sense
...and I really like her) decided that they would do blue and green footprints on a large banner. Paint, little kids, barefoot, no wine????!!?? REALLY? I needed a chair, a whip and a gun!!! Not a hose nozzle and towel. Some of these little kids were in an entirely different world than the one we were in!!
I'm home now, and after studying for exams (my oldest ones, not mine) I will have that glass on wine!!!!
Oh yeah, we might have already scared them off!!![]()
They have never been home in the daytime before so I didn't know my chickens were doing that. All I have to do is open a door or call my rooster and they all come running, that's how I check on them threw the day. I am happy he wants them back. The drought this summer brought a ton of ants and when everyone wanted them gone the only thing I could think of was to let the chickens have a bigger yard to take care of them. I think it surprised him because they were on the supports under the bed and bathtub (makes a lot of noise there). I never expected tenants wanting livestock near them, but they are natural pest control. This is however the same tenant that gets fussy with me because I take my shoes off before I enter his trailer to fix anything. He catches me in the chicken yard to pay rent or tell me there is a problem so my shoes are full of chicken poo and I don't want to track that into anyone's home. So, yay? You found the noise they were nervous about, now they want them back? Lol chicken love <3 al' natural pest control![]()
This year will be my first winter with chickens. What is this dressing thing on chickens? Is it fashion like on dogs, so blipin' cold your breath freezes, or are they not apt to handling winter?
They do better with cold than they do with hot weather. I staple visqueen over my wire areas on my coop to keep the wind out. If it gets really cold I'll put extra hay in the coop -but mine even went out in the snow we had several years ago. It didn't seem to bother them one bit. I just keep them out of the wind and dry.
Yep x2
Feathers are warm (goose down comforter) comes to mind here. LOL
