"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

No duck eggs, I just said that I'm planning to experiment with ducks for an aquaponics setup. The duck poo feeds the buffalo fish, and the wastes of [the ducks and fish] feed the bacteria that feed the plants.

Hi Kuntrygirl..Thank you for answering I was so excited to read that I AM raising 4 of your favorite 5 chickens..BO (1 roo and 4hens)- RIR (1 roo & 5 hens) - Barred Rock chicks - 1 astrolorpe hen and 3 chicks...1 americana & 1 ee I guess, am small set up but love it.. remember I am a first time - first timer..My little fizzle just hatched 4 RIR and 1 Buff Orpington chick..set 7 and 5 eggs hatched, she is so tiny probably couldn't cover them...Hatched April 5th..next day I was at the feed store and saw baby astrolorpes(Came home with 3)...at 9:30 pm that night I slipped the 3 cutties under her and I sure would like to have seen or heard her when she woke up to the 3 BLACK cutties...are chickens color blind, never thought of that...anyway all is wonderful...have 18 mixed chicks in the brooder, and 41 eggs to hatch in 7 days...was so nervous but not any more, I raised 6 children all is well....look at the math, I laughed when I would read about "the math" well thank goodness I have the room..Made an A-frame coop out of our childrens swing set (left the slide and King (roo) loves it) looks like a cajun cottage..has a tin roof and made out of cypress WIDE boards...precious....Made a hen house out of an old "potatoe house" halfed it, front for feed & supplies, partitioned nest and roost area with chicken wire (can collect eggs inside) - large window on both sides can open or close with pop door to fenced in,covered large area when not free rangeing. so much fun, so much fun,so much work ha...would love to see your farm some day...no room for turkeys as of yet , much going on...Not giving up the idea yet....planting garden veggies that chickens will like also, pumpkins, watermelons, cantelope etc.....people food too naturally...bye for now ... I didn't make the festival. To much to do around here. It made me miss my grandpa. He was a lifelong farmer. I grew up on the strawberry farm and we never went to the Festival, it was for "city folks". Farmers have crops in the field and things to do in the spring, so he said. He was even asked to be King and he turned them down; he had work that weekend. If he was riding a float, who would make sure the berries were harvested? We stayed home, cleaned the brooder, worked on the coop, weeeded, sprayed, watered the garden, dh cut all the underbrush on 3 treelines near the front of the property.

Strawberry beer is awesome. Abita makes it, you can get it bottled. It is the best beer ever. Draft beats bottled, hands down, but it is great stuff.

Coop is done but not finished. Needs to be trimmed more and paint fixed. Dumb Lowe's worker was lazy and did not mix my paint right (he scanned the chip instead of punching the numbers, so it was barely off) and it doesn't match, so I have to go back to Lowe's for more paint... again. We are also going to add a window across the front, near the top. I mentioned it to my dad, just "wish we would have" and he said he could add one. Also, this run is just temp. They are spending their first night outside now!

Boy I'm pooped today... Mowed all my property including the pipeline... (using a 42" Cut John Deere) Finished my home made super duper mondo incubator, Tilled up my garden.. Got 6 50' rows done today.. The ground was like tilling slate!!!! We haven't received much rain. Planted 2 rows of sweet corn, 2 rows of purple hulls. Moved the super mondo into the house. (wife gave me the go ahead YEAH!) Turned 70 + eggs by hand X 3..

I'm pooped!

Oh and we have some Severe weather coming.. Just off the press is a tornado watch for Western Louisiana!!!! Everyone be safe!

Amylou your coop is so pretty! love the trimwork on it. I still need to get out & put a 2nd coat of paint on mine. Now thinking of extending the peacock's coop a bit, too. Sorry you missed the strawberry festival. I bought some at the store Sat & we just sat down & ate them all, they were so good!

Very pleased with my garden this year so far, tomatoes are blooming already! & everything's up.

Hope your weather didn't get too bad Joe! wow I can't imagine turning that many eggs by hand!

Well it's not as bad as I made it sound... lol I do have 3 teenage boys and they help! The weather stalled but it is entering western Louisiana right now.

The only problem that i'm having with the Homebrew incubator is humidity... It was at 101.2 degrees when I got up, but the RH was 72%... I opened the door for a minute to let the humidity escape, and removed the wick that I had in the water pan.
